I have an older Johnson motor which runs well but draws power from my battery and gives it no charge. After about 2-3hrs of running, my battery is dead and I cannot start my motor. I should be able to disconnect the battery once the motor is started and it should stay running. Am I correct in this assumption? And where shoud I start looking for trouble?

Disconnecting the battery when the engine is running will damage the charging system. The usual cause of your problem is a shorted rectifier.

What is the model number of that engine?
