Older Evinrude idles rough, flooding engine

Hi, I just purchased a small boat with a 9.5 horse Evinrude motor. Runs decent full out, but chugs a little bit then quits when in idle mode. I have had some issues where I go to start it after sitting for a few minutes, and it won't start. I sometimes have to pull the choke again to get it to start, and the last couple times I have been flooding it out trying to start it. Any ideas?

I use to have a '67 seahorse 6 HP. There was a mixture knob that you could adjust lean/rich to get the slow speed idle for trolling etc.... Does yours have the knob? You might want to post the year and model # so some of the experts in this forum can chime in.

Lets start with the basics.Check the compression.Should be about 100 psi.within 10% of each other.Check for spark Should be blue and snap.
Try adjusting the high and low sdpeed mixture screws.
Initial high speed setting is one turn out from gently bottomed.Low speed is 1 1/2 turns out from gently bottomed.Final adjustment should be done warm in gear at the appropriate speed.High speed then low.
At its age it may be time to change the coils.A common failure on older OMC motors.

Not for sure on year. I would say late 60's early 70's. I will see if I can get the model number.

Turn the lean rich knob clockwise until it gently seats.

Turn it counterclockwise out 1 turn and start the motor, allowing it to warm up.

Turn clockwise in 1/8 or smaller increments allowing about 45 seconds between adjustments until the motor coughs.

Turn it counterclockwise 1/8 and leave it.

BTW, here are good links to learn about your new motor:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/johnson_outboards_by_horse_power/?johnson

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/evinrude_outboards_by_horse_power/?johnson

The Evinrude and Johnson 9.5 motors were the same except for the colors and decals.

The model number that you are looking for should be the first of two on an aluminum plate on the portside transom bracket. It may also be stamped into the welch plug on the top of the engine block. It is round, silver, convex and quarter sized.

Once you find the model # you can look up the year here.http://web.archive.org/web/20011223004029/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/evmodyr/EHP9.html

If the black bar appears, click "remove this frame" or the link may not work.

One other thing, how do your spark plugs look and what kind are you using?

You might want to check out the discussion around my '67 9.5 a few topics down. It ended up being a combination of gunky carb, stripped insulation on a plug wire where it meets the coil, carbon build-up, and general tuning issues. I just methodically went through it all at once and it runs fine now.

Oh, don't forget to double-check the torque on that flywheel nut.

It's always some nut behind a wheel, isn't it?
