Older 35hp Johnson fuel connection at motor

I recently purchased an '84 16ft flats boat with a 35 hp Johnson outboard that had not been in the water for some years. I had the motor checked out after having some debris-in-the-fuel problems (and paddling back to the dock). After cleaning the fuel pump the motor was fine, but as a precaution I replaced the fuel tank and hose as the bulb showed some deterioration. Now, I can't get fuel to the motor. By inspection only (this is a guess) the fuel connection at the motor seems too short for the fitting on the new fuel line. Unfortunately, I've discarded the old line. Is there an old/new fitting problem between fuel lines and older motors' connections? If so, what are my options? Can I change the motor's fitting myself? Are parts available? What is the connection at the motor actually called so I can look it up?

Thanks

I am not aware of a change in the connectors myself, I've used the same looking one for several motors now, including a 1971 20hp, 1978 35hp, and a 2000 55hp. It's a dumb question, but you are connecting it correctly, right? And another one, it IS for a Johnson/Evinrude, right? There are others that look just like the J/E ones but are for a Yammy or something. Just want to be sure.

I suspect you have the bulb facing the wrong direction. Should be an arrow on it for flow.
If you think the fittings are a problem then do away with them until you find your problem. You could run the fuel line into a milk jug full of gas and it would work fine.
For the gas tank fitting you can run the fuel line straight to one of those barb type fittings (auto, home or marine type fitting doesn't matter) and connect it with a hose clamp. Many people do it this way.

It's best to have a fitting on the outboard but it isn't necessary either. I was having problems with the fitting on my Suzuki so I just removed the fitting and ran the fuel line into the motor and then shoved the small fuel line off the motor inside it. Works great.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've had three boats with outboards, so the bulb was going in the right direction. The fuel line was a "works with everything" type from Walmart. I'll go to West Marine and get one for my motor and see what happens.

Thanks again.

The fuel line that you bought probably has the wrong connector on it. While I can't remember which brand it is, off of the top of my head, there is one that looks just like an OMC connector, but isn't. It won't fit on the motor's connector properly.

Go back to Wally World and exchange what you purchased for a line that is specific to OMC motors. You'll be fine after that.

The Mercury/Yamaha fittings look like OMC.

Doesn't matter where you buy the fuel line/connectors they all come from the same place CHINA.

Unless OMC changed their fittings in the last few years they are all the same.

I would go back and exchange the line/fittings since its probably defective.
