Old Mariner Outboard impellor housing looks alittle melted on outside

I just removed lower unit after I was having some over heating issues and looking at the impellor housing it looks alittle melted does anyone know what would cause this... I would post pics but I'm unable to until I make another post.....

Mine ('82) was that way and it was most likely from a couple of instances of the impeller running dry.

Can't really tell the damage from the photos. Probably more important than outside damage is what its like on the inside. If nothing that would interfere with water flow or mangle impeller, probably OK to use. On the other hand, you've already got it out ..........
