Old Johnson Motor Mount Screws?

I have a 1963 10 HP Johnson. One of the "screws" if that is what it is called, got so frozen in place (from sitting) it could not be removed. The handle broke off. I used the best penetrant I have ever used and heat and could not get it out. The soft metal kept stripping and breaking. It will have to be drilled out. Was this a standard size thread that I can get a tap to clean up the threads for a new screw? If I can't find one, a bolt will have to do.

Are you talking about the transom mount screws/handles? If so, they CAN be tough to get loose for sure! I'm just not sure of the thread size. They are all standard for a whole bunch of OMC motors. I believe you will be able to clean up the threads and find a used transom screw/handle combo. They may even be reasonable new (but I doubt it). I have seen people use bolts before---looks awful but works.

They have used 1/2", 9/16" and 5/8'" on various models. All are standard-course thread.

Hint: when drilling it out, deliberately drill it off center and progressivly go larger till you cut through the threads on one side. What you should wind up with is a crescent-shaped remainder. Collapse the crescent and screw it out (toward the transom side if you can get a grab on it there.)

Transom screw/handle.......That sound like what it should be called. I wonder what new ones look like. Do they screw in from behind and the handle goes on last or do they go in from the front and the "washer" goes on last?

They come with the handle already attached to the screw, so you screw it in, then attach the plate with a special retainer. The old ones were a bit tricky to attach, it took a special tool or some creative engineering to flatten the retainer. But new replacements should have a screw holding the plate instead of the old retainer method.
