I have removed the gear case on this old motor. Is there a tool to remove the seal or just utilize a punch etc. Do I just fill the gear case back up with gearoil.
Re: Old johnson 3 hp motor (JW-12) Project Question
There used to be a special tool, rather complex and expensive. Nowadays, you just get it out the best way you can. A slide hammer bushing puller sometimes works, sometimes it just bends the seal.
Re: Old johnson 3 hp motor (JW-12) Project Question
Sweet. I have the next model year motor . Those are very simple lower units to re-seal. There's only like three seals all together, to replace. Upper seal, prop seal and prop hub o-ring. Which stands the reason, these are less likely to take in water, then the full shift motors.
