Old Evinrude Outboard...

Hey guys. I bought an old bass boat last year with a 70 hp Evinrude outboard motor on it. I havn't done a thing to it for maintenance and ran it all last summer with minimal problems. As a new outboard owner, what is the recommended service/maintenance with a motor like this, i.e. clean the carburateor? Do I need to take it in to get serviced somewhere? and if so, what should I expect so as to not get ripped off?

Any comments and help would greatly be appreciative as I would like to prevent from getting stranded in the middle of the lake this summer.

Re: Old Evinrude Outboard...

Welcome aboard slug!

Be nice to post a year of the engine or the model no.

Do you have any idea what the maint. has been?

Ususally, being a new to you O/B, a compression check on all cylinders, spark test to make sure the ignition system is good, carb overhaul, impeller (water pump) replacement and t-stat, would be the minimal along with checking the lower unit gear lube for water.

But since we don't know the year and what maint has been done, all the above may not be neccessary unless ya' like piece of mind.

Also, an OEM service manual would be a great invetment for the engine. It'll give you specifics on your engine and help you do any maint required and instructions on how to keep it running a long time.

Re: Old Evinrude Outboard...

sorry, its an '86 Evinrude 70hp. Runs great but struggles when idling sometimes. The seller recently replaced the water pump. All other maintenance is completely unknown so I think I'll take you up your recommended procedures. I appreciate your help OBJ.

Re: Old Evinrude Outboard...

I am new to outboards as well. I recently purchased a 1978 Evinrude 175 without any manuals and so I called Evinrude and ordered a manual specific to the model. You can get manuals on just about any Evinrude engine from a supplier of theirs. It was rather expensive...~ $25.00...but it's been a great help.
