Re: old evinrude 6 hp

That is the model number for the 1965 model, first year of the 6HP Evinrude: http://web.archive.org/web/20010907230907/www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/evmodyr/EHP6.html

Your fuel oil ratio is 50:1, 87 or 89 US Octane Gasoline to TC-W3 oil: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm

You will have the best results using Champion J6C spark plugs set at .030: http://www.boatsetup.com/Spark Plug Chart 2007 BRP.pdf

Your gearcase needs high viscosity marine gearcase oil.

ok, I'm back again with another question. This motor had been sitting unused for about 1 1/2 years. I took it all apart and cleaned everything. I put new fuel lines/ fuel filter/ primer bulb on it. It has fresh gas/oil, and new plugs.

It will run, but not very well at all. It will start to run , but there is gas coming out of the hole where the choke butterfly sits, and it sputters out / dies very soon. Also it seems that it runs longer if no throttle is given. (still not very long , but longer than if you try to give it any gas.)

I don't know much about carbs, but it seems like something needs to happen in that area? What do you think will help get this thing going again?

It sounds as though it is flooding because the float needle valve is not seating and shutting off the fuel flow when the bowl is full.

Could be dirt, wear, not fitted properly, defective or incorrectly adjusted float but that's the area I would look at to begin with.
As an experiment after filling the bowl with the primer bulb disconnect the fuel line and try to get it started, persist if necessary. If I am right once you get it going it should run until the bowl is nearly empty.

BTW look at TD's "Top Secret File" pinned second item from the top of the Johnson & Evinrude Index.
You'll find several topics there that may be of use to you
