I have a chance to buy a Viking 9.2hp engine that looks to have very few hours on it. I believe Vikings were branded for Eaton's Department Stores in Canada but actually manufactured by Chrysler (or West Bend). It is marked Model 94701. What year might I be looking at here? A Chrysler/Force model history in a library book indicates that Chrysler stopped producing 9.2hp's in 1967 so I assume it could not be newer than that. Does that sound right? Is it a good motor? Are parts available? I need something reliable to power my 12ft aluminum for lake fishing. Or is something newer, like a late 80's or 90's 9.9 a more reliable and powerful choice?? Any thoughts. It fired up on the third pull from stone cold.....

Re: Old 9.2hp Chrysler

I like good old fashioned points! If you lose spark, most of the time all you need to do is clean the points. With electronic ignition, there are no servicable parts. Your only choice is replacement.

You're not going to win any races against other 9.9's but you'll give an old Johnnyrude 9 1/2 a good run for the money. They're good old motors. No bells, no whistles. Fewer things to break. And most of the usual service parts are still available. The magneto parts are ridiculously expensive, but you can clean points over and over.

Gas/oil ratio is 50:1, but I think you'd be safer running 32:1. Any old gearlube is fine for the gearcase. Definately rebuild the water pump, fuel pump too (rubber parts). If the rope is frayed, replace it now. A new set of sparkplugs can't hurt. Good luck with it.

Re: Old 9.2hp Chrysler

Hi Daytrip
This is just an interesting note. I don't have any info on Viking branded model numbers. I do how ever have them for Chrysler and Seakings (same motor in this case). Here is the interesting part. My book agrees with yours, that 1967 was the last year Chrysler put out the 9.2hp under the chrysler lable. Now my Seaking list shows the 9.2 until 1969. I don't know that any of this really matters as far as service and repair are concerned. I can't say for a fact, but I doubt if there is a difference in parts either. So I guess it would be possible that your motor could be a little bit newer.

Re: Old 9.2hp Chrysler

Thank you both for the comments. You confirm what I'd been thinking. 1) In terms of getting ignition parts, the age is probably a plus, not a minus as I understand newer Chrysler type products have the module which is more difficult and/or expensive. 2) I was surprised when I picked it up as it weighs about the same as my old 6 hp (very tired) Johnson, considerably less than I'd expect a newer 9.9 to weigh. While this means it would be easier to tote than a newer 9.9, but at the same time, I think it would be a much less powerful engine and maybe wouldn't be able to get my aluminum up on a plane like I think a lot of 9.9's will. Maybe not much different than my old 6 hp was when it was a little stronger. So we'll see. Thanks for the input. Very helpful.
