Old 20hp Johnson driveshaft

I posted an in depth description of a problem I'm having with my '68 Johnson 20 hp entitled "68 Johnson 20 hp SKIPPING" but I have another quick question.
Is there any way the slot the driveshaft slips into inside the power head could be worn down and cause the problem I'm having?
I would assume that would require me to take the entire power head apart. What piece would I be looking for? does the drive shaft go directly into the fly wheel?

The drive slip's directly into the crankshaft. If the splines were stripped in the crankshaft, then of course that is what you would replace.

thanks! Is it a pretty in-depth procedure to check the crank shaft?
I'm hoping a fresh driveshaft does the trick if so.
