Old (1960's) merc outboards BP designation

What does the designation BP refer to relative to these old motors. I see posts regarding the BP motors and wondered what it meant. Usually in reference the old merc 1000's and merc 1250's.

That looks very much like the forerunner to the SSM (Super Speed Master) gearcases. It also looks like it was designed to run surface piecing props.

I'd bet they sure were loud. The BP was a commercially available racing motor, with full gear shift (various gearing options).....for those that could only dream of owning a twister.
