I have an old johnson 18hp outboard motor that I am able to start, but it keeps cutting out or missing. Almost as if its running on one cylinder. I checked the plugs and the top one was very black and the bottom one not so black after only running it for about 5 minutes. Does anybody have any suggestions??

Hi nathan. Sonds like you've guessed right. The black plug is give usually a give away that one of the cylinders isn't firing properly. When you say "older" Johnson, ho old is it exactly. I only ask because depending on the model you'll need different bits to fix it. If it's a pre-1974 model it should use the old mageto ignition system using points and condensers (i.e. a "tune up kit" = $20). If it's newer than '74 you'll probably have electronic ignition, which means you'll ave to track down a new "power pack". However, before you do any of that, check each plug to see if they're getting spark. The best way would be to get a $8 gap spark plug tester from an auto parts store. Remove the plugs from the motor and instert them into the tester one at a time. The spark should be able to jump a 1/4" gap. If it can't, then you probably need to repair/replace the ignition components. Either way it shouldn't be too expensive to fix. At worst you may need to buy a new coil, but with any luck you won't. Try test your spark, then let us know what you find. We can walk you through anything you might need to do. Great motor you got there and well worth trying to keep alive. Good luck.

If it's pre '74, pull the recoil off, and the inspection plate on top of the flywheel. If the coils are cracked there's no fix but replacing 'em. You can most always clean pits out of the point faces (remove 'em first) and get 'em shiny and regap to .020". Lots of info on that type of magneto (pre-'74) in this forum. They used the same coils/points/condensers from '52-'73, 3-40hp. Use copper core wires and not auto graphite core plug wires if you change 'em out. If you reuse the wires, cut 1/2" off coil end before inserting into new coil (they spin onto the threaded pin) to ensure a good connection. good luck!

i would also recommend checking compression first before you start throwing parts at it

The model number is FD-18E and the best I can tell from google is that must have been build in 1964. I will try to test the spark tomorrow and see what I find out.

The 18's were built with only one kind of ignition system and that's the older style universal type. Chances are, your coils and wires need to be replaced. No worries. It's a very common thing. The insulation on the coils crack and then they arc out on the mag plate.

They're easily obtainable at Napa, your local marine supply, or here at iBoats.

I appreciate all the advice so far. This is my first boat/motor to own or work on so I'm just kind of learning as I go. To check out my coils I'm assuming that I will need to remove the flywheel. Am I going to need a gear pull or anything like that do this?

You need a harmonic balance puller with grade 8 hardened bolts - they screw in the 3 holes on top of the flywheel. Screw them in 7/16" and then tighten the center bolt until she pops. Leave the flywheel nut loosely on the shaft, so the flywheel isn't launched into space when it pops.

Here's a link to a series of articles about working on old OMC motors;

When You put the puller bolts into the flywheel, be carefull not to go to far. I have a 1952 Johnson QD13, 10hp that someone put the bolts in to far and pulled the ground wire out of one coil and partially cut the other one. They appear to be brand new coils!

Good Luck
