i have a 1975 140 what years did they use the same Outdrve

can i put the engine in a 1985 boat with little changes

Out drive will not go into forward unless you take the cable off and pull it farther than
the shifter does can this be a bad cable or just an adjustment or is it worse than that?

Thanks jay

Welcome Aboard Jay

I guess we are talking about a mercruiser? 140 is just a little vague..
You may be able to install motor and OD into your newer boat..Dont know for certain.
Your shifting issue sounds very much like a worn out shift cable

ok... Outdrive for that engine has a ratio (or should have) of 1.98:1. Any MC1, R, MR, Alpha One (that's from about 1967 to 1990) with 1.98:1 will work fine.

The shift issue could be anything from a worn control box to wear and slack in the shift spool in the drive (and anything in between)....
Have a look at this thread to see exactly how all the cables and shift mechanisms link together. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1930449#post1930449 (This also has a fantastic description of exactly how the whole system works)...
