eewwwww
im gonna print that.
everytime I think about getting a wood stove, again, that will help remind me why I canned the last one.
I would rather work an extra day a week for 3 months to pay my heating than split, stack and haul ashes again :) :)

Heres a better pic, showing just how big and HEAVY these logs are. We don't have a wood stove, but are getting an insert in our existing fireplace. My uncle had one in his place, and this Feb when it was -30F it was 80F in the house from only his fireplace........burned 1 log an hour or less. So we plan to do the same over winter now.

Re: Ok...............Who is gonna help me????

by hand?
yep thats how we did it, sometimes we would wait a day for the wood faries but they were always busy at the neighbors house I guess.
got a lot of fond memories as a teen busting wood with a wedge and maul. no one back here ever seen a splitter(hydrualic) and sometimes the sweat would roll down your leg so bad you did not know if it was a tick crawling up or sweat running down.
sure was nice when the women folk brought out that tea :) :) .
sometimes I want a wood stove. usually by morning I am sober again and the thought has passed.

Go fishin. It's Spring and the seasoning of the wood can wait a bit longer.
Better yet, there must be a kid in the hood willing to earn a few bucks. eh?

Kids don't need to earn a few bucks these days- they're all spoiled brats who don't know what work is!

These days, you wouldn't want a local kid splitting wood. They've never used an axe, wedge, or maul before. They're just as liable to injure themselves as get any wood split, then sue your xxx off.

Rent or buy a used hydraulic splitter---you won't regret it. Also, stacking the wood right next to the house isn't such a good idea. Termites and carpenter ants can't tell the difference between firewood and your house.

Now ya did it Pony, just made me do it didn't ya! :D The wood that is stacked is what I did myself last week after work. A splitter sure makes fast work of it. The wood in the pile waiting to be split is some from the 2005 ice storm that we had. I still get fresh stuff in like the mullberry (green colored wood) and try to get it split as early as I can so that it can season before winter. Since September of last year, I have only burned about 40 gallons of fuel oil. The season before was about 60 gallons.

I usually completely fill the whole area under the back porch and a few rows out in the open. That pretty much does the whole season for me. Even with all the means to move, cut, and stack the wood, my back still gets a workout. I would be glad go help you, but yer a bit far away from me.
Re: Ok...............Who is gonna help me????

Haven't split any of it yet, as the weather is horrible for doing anything outside.......40's with lots of wind and rain.

I did load and unload all of it myself..........by hand. Its ok, I'm a big'n.

I think my neighbors have some wood to split, so the talk is of renting one and helping each other to all the spliting in one day. Which is GREAT because its still pretty wet wood and wont split easily at all with a mual or a wedge.

I do hate stacking the wood against the garage, but there isnt really many other places to put it. Wood has been there for all the years we have lived here......20 years. Also puting it anywhere else makes it dificult to grab wood during wintertime..........usually have to snowblow a path to where it sits now.

Re: Ok...............Who is gonna help me????

There is an easier way........Check this out !!
...............................................

"Hello, is this here the Sheriff's Office?"
"Yes. What can I do for you?"
"I'm callin' to report my neighbor, Virgil Smith. He's drillin'
holes in his farwood and hidin' marijuana inside!"
"Thank you very much for the call, sir."

The next day, the Sheriff & his deputies descend on Virgil's house.
They search the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they split every piece of wood,
but find no marijuana. They sneer at Virgil and leave.

The phone rings at Virgil's house. "Hey, Virgil! This here's Floyd. Did the Sheriff come?"
"Yeah!"
"Did they split yer farwood?"
"Yep!"
"Happy Birthday, buddy!"

(Who says us rednecks aren't too bright?!)
