ok since this is in a diff catagory ill give the short version. this boat was givin to me 2 weeks ago. The P.O. (steve) bought it new in 1991. In 1995 the boat sat 6-8 wekks with no cover and plug in hull. He pulled powerhead, had boat cleaned and stored covered since, I have been told that I need to drill to see whats under the glass. thats tomorrow, tonight I pulled the drain plug in the outdrive and this is what I saw.. Crystal clear water came out first about 1-1.5 cups then fresh looking oil, had the blue tint and smelled like 90 weight.. so what are your thoughts????? Oh this is a 1991 bayliner capri with the force 70 L drive Boat has 52 hours on it and about 12 " water built up in the boat back in 95

Strip it and sell the parts A very problematic system Not easily modified to a more mainline system it will break your heart.I suppose it may become collectable someday after all look at the Edsel. But the first year Edsels have some system faults that can make restoration and maintenance a pain.
Do an L drive search here. Some do run them but others have run screaming into the night.

Driveshaft seal is probably leaking from age and in need of replacement or the vent and oil fill screws may be leaking collecting the water when submerged.
Drop the lower unit check/replace the driveshaft seal, waterpump impeller, lower unit oil and vent screw gaskets.

Re: ok i asked, now help me through it please

Im not 100% sure its a 70hp, the engine is still at the original owners house I should get it next weekend, and as far as tearing it down. I dont have an issue with doing that I just want to see if a seal kit is available. Im going to assume that I can get bearings (if needed) from bearing service as I assume they are nominal sizes. any fiber gaskets I can possibly make as long as I have the correct material at the shop, My biggest concerned is pre formed o ring seals???? I went to marineengines.com and they do show seal kits but only a few on hand and I havent verified the model# of the stern drive yet..

Guess it could just be condensation from setting so long! My 125 Force set for12 years and I only had to change the lower unit oil and impeller.

Make sure you can get all the parts before taking anything apart, don't assume anything with a Force, parts can be hard to find.

OK so this is where im at. Im going to take the prop shaft out and check the seals... Im going to assume that the seals are going to be a nominal size??? and typical lay out of a shaft seal??? I said in my first post that cant is not in my vocab, BUT I also am wise enough not to pay for my belief, there IS a diff between cant' and should'nt;) so I know that I have to atleast find out if the seals are good, Since this boat was givin to me, I will make it work but if parts are not available and if for some reason I wont be able to fabricate or machine new parts then it wouldnt happen... so Ill be back in a few hours to let ya see... heres what im sarting with

Steve the original owner had a death in the family , thats why it sat for 6-8 weeks with no cover and pluged.. when he got back in the swing of things he took the motor out and had a local boat shop tear it down to check it out and then coated all the critical surfaces and has had it stored ( in his house) since 95, Im going to go get it next weekend, and I text him today and he says he remembers it being a 90hp. ok back to work be back in a bit

Its hard to pass up a free boat. You should probably get a Ldrive repair manual.See if you can find some Ldrive posts here ,there is some good info.

YUP Im off to the bookstore tonight to get one if they have it. OR where can I order one?? OK so heres what I found, No rust on the input or output shafts!! Are they stainless?? lost my magnet..
DSC00589.jpg

Looks better than I thought. and the rubber that I could get to looked and felt good, sign of others??? probobly not but one can hope
DSC00592.jpg

The foam that was wrapped around drive engage rod was damp..

DSC00590.jpg

also when i engaged the output shaft in either foward or reverse There is 1/8 of a turn in worth of slack in pinion gear.. Adjustable ???? once I get the right wrench to take the bearing carrier nut off.. also noticed that there is no gasket between the lower and upper parts of the stern drive

DSC00591.jpg

Ok so what are your thoughts and Ideas on what next move is??? And yes I did take a brass punch to see if I could loosen the nut, But im sure that piece isnt available so ill buy the wrench;)

Shafts are stainless.
"Hate when I loose the magnet!
You'll be able to tell more when you get the water pump housing off.
Dirt dobbers seemed to find a home in the lower unit. Make for sure they haven't blocked the water passage way's.

Don't worry about the 1/8 it's pretty much normal to have that much play at the propeller.

Try an get an official 85hp THRU 125hp L-Drive manual off Ebay if you can.

Remove the four nuts, pull the waterpump cover off the drive shaft to expose the impeller, post a picture of the inside of the pump housing and impeller.
Do not pull the driveshaft!

Re: ok i asked, now help me through it please

ok here it is... first off gasket looks great... a little permatex #3 aviation and 20 extra inch pounds of torque and this will seal, second, water pump blade im sure has lost tension in a few of the tips BUT it looks great as well, still feels pliable and not all cracked as i expected to see in any rubber parts... SO is that impellar (correct term??) gonna be available or interchangable????? SO now what??? you said dont pull the shaft?? why not?? and what is the opinion that the water that drained out first from the lower unit was condensation????? the ruber i have seen so far looks good any chance the other are looking as good?? Im thinking change the impellar and new oil??? OPINIONS??????? ooohhh and is the dirt normal??? minimal??? excessive????

Re: ok i asked, now help me through it please

ok so i pulled the impellar out of the housing and the walls look good, and the blades on the impellar look ok, there are small folds on the inside of the blades and im sure they lost tension? Or any chance of reusing??? also on the back side of the prop there is what i would call the thrust bearing??? as you can see the prop housing has carroded ....is the thrust bearing suppose to have any crush (be tight) when inserted in the prop housing??? Or is it a clearance fit??? I can set the prop up in the mill and machine for a sleeve if needed???
