does anyone care to voice an opinion on the best, safest,or most reliable setup for a large outboard?premixing or the tank?I dont have much experience with them and could use some advice as to which way to go. or is it even an option?also,if the motor has tilt/trim,does it have the pump contained in the unit?or will I need my old i/o pump?Dont mean to sound silly Im just trying to learn.
Im in the middle of an i/o to o/b conversion.does anybody have any cool links on the subject?how about a design plan for a single o/b bracket?
Thanks

Howdy, Cbuie.

If your engine is carbureted you have the option of disconnecting the oil injector and using premix. Premix is more trouble and safer.

If your engine is EFI or DFI you don't have the option.

If your engine is a 4 stroke you don't need to worry about it.

The T&T unit on your big outboard includes the pump. :)

Re: oil tank or premix debate

There is only one sure fire, failsafe oil injection system, and that is premix. The seal, pump, sensor, ect doesn't cause the engine to run without oil,if it isn't put into the equation in the first place.
Don't get me wrong, I like making things better, efficiant and clean running.
This reminds me of a TRUE story about NASA,and thier quest to design a pen that would function in the zero-gravity environment of space. They spent hours upon hours of trial and error, millions of dollars, and finally, they did it!! The ideal design was set into manufacture. It worked flawlessly, and the designers were very proud. They asked the Russians if they would be interested in this technology as part of the "new partnership" in space exploration..They said no, and explained they had already addressed the problem years ago..It's called a pencil!

In any engineering class, there is a priamry rule of design..Called the "K.I.S.S." approach to design,(stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid).
Some designs, regardless of how idiotic, are deemed as important, due to dictates by governments, special interest groups, public safety and other bodies or autority. So we hafeta have these stupid devices on our new Mercrudes...But then we are faced with the blurbs: "if it aint broke, don't fix it"..Or "Design it so it can't be fixed if it breaks"...Or "If it aint broke, something is not fair about it".
It's a new world out there. Perhaps my Grandson can make lemonade outta the lemons we pass on. I just hope his generation don't design a better fruitfly!!!
