Oil level warning?

I have a 2000 model 2-stroke Mrecury 150 off- shore. On a previous outing i had a warning buzzer go off, it was not the overheating warning that sounds when starting the motor. it was more of an intermitten buzzing sound. i found the oil level in the oil resivoir to be less than 1/3 full, bad me! After filling the oil resivoir i went out again and had no problems. I have done some research in this forum and using the information i've learned i went yesterday and did a littel checking on the oil system. i found all hoses to be attached properly to the oil resivoir, no excess oil in or around the engine block. I ran the motor and removed the cap from the oil tank on the motor and it overflowed almost instantly. I ran it for 30 min and had no warnings go off. i shut it down and waited a while and fired it up again and it smoked a bit, so i'm figuring it is getting oil to the injection. My question is, am i missing some thing?? I am waiting on a manual for this engine, i'm not sure of what type of warning sensors it has. i am also courious to know if this engine has a kill switch if it begins to overheat? Any advice will be appriciated! This is a great forum and i have found answers to numerous questions Thanks!

Re: Oil level warning?

Thanks for the reply studly!
Yes,the oil level was normal (full) in the injection tank. It was low (1/4 tank) in the reserve tank. I have been out a few times since
my post with no more warnings. I hope thats a good thing! i am making sure to keep the reserve tank full, and have been checking the injection tank periodically, and it has been full each time i have checked it. I am thinking it was the Low Oil level warning? what do you think?

By the way, that's a beautiful Boat you have there! What manufactor?

I have a 90 but the same thing should apply. The oil warning is intermittent as compared to overheat which is a solid blast.

You should have a clear plastic tube going from the oil reservoir to the input of the VRO pump. This tube should be solid oil, no air (bubbles). If air you must bleed it out. Manual tells you how.

Don't know about what you said about oil blowing out if you ran the engine with the cap off. I know my tank has a pretty stout seal but I figured that was to keep it from leaking when you tilt the engine.

It is possible that they pressurize the tank slightly to insure that the oil remains supplied to the VRO pump. Don't know what pressure they would use, how much, or where it would come from.

HTH

Mark

Re: Oil level warning?

The oil reservoir on the boat is pressurized, this feeds the reservoir tank on the motor. If you remove or loosen the cap on this tank while the motor is running, then you will have oil overflowing. There is a check valve in the feed line before it enters the motor tank and a short hose that would dump excess oil into the cowling if the check valve were open (defective). This would prevent over pressurizing the tank.
You should be watching and checking those short oil lines to see if they are getting hard or brittle. If they fail why running, you oil waring alarm will not go off until the engine oil tank is below 2/3rds empty, then it will be too late and your enging will not be getting oil to mix w/fuel. I have read about several engines that have had failures because of this. Mercury does sell these lines for about $17-18.
