oil leak from new unit

I have a Alpha 1 gen 2 and Merc 3.0.

I installed new upper and lower today. Ran it on the muffs and all seems well. I tilted it up to park for the night and noticed oil is leaking. It is leaking from between where the upper and lower meet. Was there supposed to be a gasket here? Any ideas where this leak is coming from? Thank.

There is a small rubber seal or O-ring (little smaller than a dime) that goes between the two halves to seal the gear lube line.

Another thing I've seen ....

If the shift rod isn't correctly aligned when the drive is installed,it can get bent, and damage the shift rod seal.

DHP

that small black quad ring on the penny seals the oil between the upper and lower

in my manual they recomend useing a small drop of bellows seal to hold it into the lower for assembly

tommays

Thanks guys. Guess no way around pulling it apart again. I did see the quad ring when I assembled it. Perhaps it came loose. Is there any reason I shouldn't seperate the lower without unbolting the whole leg?

i just found it a LOT easyer to set it up on the bench and be sure everything lines up like the water tube and quad ring

then while it's still there i pressure test it and if its good i dont hae to worry after i install it

tommays

Don S, can you post this picture again?

Have a Merc 350 I/0.

I have a leak coming from my Alpha 1 drive, not Gen II.

The oil is dark and I can only see the source of the leak when I lay on my back and look up at the lower unit while it is on the trailer. It looks like a T that I can wiggle where the leak is coming from.

Is this the quad ring or shift shaft seal?

thanks!

If you had the drive tilted up, i would have to say it is the o-ring between the upper and lower;.
