Hi there, I have a 1998 Four Winns Horizon with a 4.3L Volvo engine and Volvo SX outdrive. I've noticed that I have seen oil leaking out of my outdirve. I checked the level and it is fine or even a little high. I'm sure that a seal is leaking, but I'm wondering what the most common seal issues are and then how difficult it would be to replace.

The engine and outdrive are still under a 50:50 warranty, but the dealer is located 45 minutes away and I'd rather take care of the issue myself unless it's going to be costly or a difficult repair.

Thanks

Ron

If oil can leak out, water can leak in and raise your level. If you have a warranty, I would recommend the 45 minute drive....ASAP if there is water in the drive.

Pull that back plastic cover off and look and see what is leaking. The seal on the shift mechanism would be my guess. But draining the gear lube and doing a pressure and vacuum check of the drive will reveal the real problem.

Do you know how easy or difficult the seal would be to replace?

When I checked the oil last week it looked good-doesn't look like any water has mixed with the oil.

Check Don's reply,There has also been a so called propshaft seal issue until VP did a seal upgrade two years ago.

I pulled to cover off today and it is the shift lever seal that is leaking. Does anyone know where I can find the part number for the seal or seals? Also, it looks pretty straight forward. Has anyone tackled replacing these seals before.

Thanks

Just above your post, click where it says "Volvo Penta Parts" and follow the links for parts and parts breakdowns.
You can also go to the Adults Only sticky (first post in this forum) and download the OEM service manuals.
Look around the site, you might find something you need.
