I have a 1989 Regal and it has the 5.7 350 magnum. This is the 4 bbl mercruiser sterndrive. I have an oil leak right rear facing engine. It appears to be coming from wher an oil filter may have been attached if this was in a truck or car. It does not appear to be the lines but rather a cover on the bottom with maybe a 7/8” nut protrusion. The material feels like plastic and I am imagining a piece with a seal that takes the place of the oil filter. The oil filter on this model is is on the top right and connected by hoses to the point I am describing.

My question is can I remove this cover with a wrench an replace the seal. I don’t think the leak is valve covers rear main seal or the oil filter lines. Any help by someone familiar would be appreciated.

Hi. Thinking pessimistically, is the oil definitely not coming from a spillage when filling the engine through the filler hole on the rocker cover ? A messy fill, can often result in oil finding its way down into places that can alarm an owner and assume the worst.
Anyway. That’s the best version of events and worth a try.
Otherwise, I’d be checking the fitting at the oil pressure sensor down there. Also check the fittings that are to and from the remote oil filter you described. Those fittings will be down there somewhere, if I’ve read you right.

The seal part number is 27-91892 and is a square O ring or called a quad ring

The first time I have used this forum other than reading posts. This information was very helpful. This is a tough place to get to on the bottom of the engine and is difficult to see what you are doing. You can get a glimpse with a mirror but I didn’t want to break something and have to raise the engine to repair it.

I have ordered the part and will let you know the results after I get it changed. This has been a stubborn leak to find. I wouldn’t have been able to make this repair without your assistance.

Thank you for posting your answers.
