Hello,

Just found this site after following a link in another boat forum I am a member of in the UK.

Just hoping you guys might be able to help with a question I have regarding the 150XR2 Merc I have, believe its an 86 model.

I am planning to remove oil injection system but I have read differing opinions about what I should do about this.

My local dealer has told me just to disconnect the oil tank and go pre-mix but I have read on other sites that they recommend removing the pump and fitting a "dummy kit" and blanking plate. Otherwise the lower cylinders will run lean

I appreciate this is necessary on many of the newer performance engines but is it needed on the older models??

I don't mind buying the kit and fitting it myself but is it worth it??

Any knowledge or thoughts on this subject??

Cheers
Dave

The blank off plug does two things. One is to make up a little lost volume in the crankcase, and the other is to positively retain a bushing in the block that could cause trouble if it came out.

Here's the proper procedure. I'd tell you to use the search feature, but it stinks.

Re: oil injection removal Merc V6 only

You need part number 43453 if it is available. That retains the pump driveshaft bushing and plugs the hole where the pump mounts. Then remove the oil components and the warning module. You'll also need to remove the fitting that the oil tank pressure hose attaches to and plug the hole in the block.

Order three stickers (37-818029 1), one to mount near the fuel fitting on the motor, one for the dash, and one near the fuel fill fitting on the boat. They'll alert the operator that the gas needs to have oil added. One frequent problem we see here regards the infamous "brother-in-law" that forgets to add oil to the gas and roaches the motor.

You should probably replace the fuel lines where the fitting for the oil T's into the fuel line with a single piece of fuel line.

hope it helps

Many thanks John - so it looks like its safer to remove the pump altogether.

I'll go order the spares kit immediately

John helped me a ton when I did this to my motor last year! I ordered my blockoff kit and screws from an online dealer as my Merc dealer couldn't get the part for some reason. The stickers that John listed were also no longer available (thru my dealer anyways), so I had these made up at a local sticker shop. Put one by the fill, on the cowl, and up on the dash. They work/look great.

I also put a rubbermaid storage tote in the back of the boat strapped in with two nylon straps, in there I have a measuring funnel with shutoff valve, and a gallon of oil. My gas gauge is fairly accurate so I know by the gauge to put oil in for 10gal of gas and then top it off with that many gallons. Works great, no worrys or stupid alarms (my alarm modual was shot) and the motor runs very happy it seems.

Gents

I finally received the plug and o-ring kit and started work on the replacement this afternoon.

I unbolted the oil pump and was expecting to find a brass "sheave" and steel drive shaft from the crank to the pump. What I actually found can only be described as a nylon "drive plate". This is slotted so it engages with the pump and revolves when the fly wheel is turned.

It seems to be a relatively soft material and is marking easily in my attempts to remove it.

No matter how much I try I cannot remove it - tried pulling it and "unscrewing" it both clockwise and anti clockwise.

Can anyone tell me how this should be removed - it is quite tight. I dont want to damage it any further until I have a better idea at what I should be doing.

The other question I have is that it was recommended that the alarm module is also removed. Is the over heat alarm fitted through this module or not?? I have a temp and water pressure gauge fitted on the dash so not worried if I lose the audible alarm. In fact, i am not sure I would hear it anyway when the engine is running at full stroke, just a question.

Any help would be appreciate - boating activites now on standby until pump issue is resolved!!

Cheers

OK Gents

Finally managed to complete the fitting of the plug and subsequent removal of the oil injection system. Thanks for you help and comments.

I have also followed the advice about the warning signs. However, my mate is a sign writer so he made me some up - one fitted to the fitted filler cap on the stern and one fitted on the dashboard.

The measuring jug is permanently carried in the "toolbox" on the trailer. It is already marked clearly so it easy to measure the amount of oil for my jerry cans. Hope its simple enough that there is no mis-understanding no mater who is filling her up.

All that needs to be done now is take her out for a run, if the weather improves it should be this coming week

Cheers

John, I have one question in reference to removing the O.I.S. with now pre-mixing can the oil settle to the bottom of the tank and cause foul out. The original tank is a bottom feed pick-up. I have installed the kit in mine and I'm getting a lot of smoke and fouled plugs. I have also just ordered new Reeds from Chris Carson, they seemed real weak. I told them how great of a help you have been in my venture of sorrow's with my boat. Awaiting the Reed's and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks Again John

Naw, it mixes in and stays suspended. The OIS thins down to about 100:1 at idle, so you will get a smokier idle for sure.

Look over the bleed lines and check valves with a jaundiced eye when you do the reeds. A bad line or valve can fuddle up yer idle.

Re: Oil injection removal - Merc 150 XR2

I don't mean to hijack an old thread but figured the title would be the same as mine. I have an 87 xr2 150 I would like to disable the oil injection on. My question is I have read you can take a tee and re route from the oil reservoir to oil pump and tee the oil inlet to the tee then plug the oil inlet to the fuel pump. I would like to keep the oil injection in place for any future owners but for me I like the piece of mind of premix. I do not run the motor over 4k rpm so I'm not a racer just do not trust 27 year old plastic. Thanks for any info.

That is what I do on the motors I own and work on. it has worked fine , and keeps all the injection parts in place. Very easy switch back to injection if wanted. It just recirculates the oil and the alarm still works as it should. Have a 87 70 made to 90 that I did back in 1995 that is still this way with no troubles other than switching to hotter plugs that handle the extra oil at idle. The use of synthetic oil helps reduce the smoke also. JMO

Thanks oldman what plugs would you recommend? I have a new set of the BU8H NGK's.

Those plugs are OK and will work. I prefer the BR9HS-10 plugs though. Easier to read for jetting and they burn fouling off faster after a long idle or trolling session.
