oil injection on circa 1989 Sea Ray 100

I just purchased a Sea Ray 160 with a 100hp outboard from 1989 or 1990. The outboard has Sea Ray logos but I believe these were made for Sea Ray by Mercury. It has only 300-some hours and runs fine, though a bit hard to start after sitting. A neighbor much more knowledgeable about boats suggested I ought to by pass the oil injection system, as those are known to fail and cause engine damage. I think he is speaking of those systems generally, not specific to Mercury or this outboard. I'm curious if any advice from this forum on that, as well as whether there is any way to assess my current system to see how healthy it is. Thanks!

There's no reason to abate the oil injection system if it works, however, if it's oil injected I'd be suspect only of age of system vs use

Most common failure of the oil injection system I'm guessing your motor has based on sea ray branded merc outboards has a fibre cog that drives the oil pump. There's an ancient recall for the cog but I'd guess your motor is okay, pretty sure merc had the issue rectified before Brunswick issued market crossing
