Oil in water tank

I just purchased a 1996 5hp Mercury, after running it in water tank for the first time, I see oil in the water. there was also quite a bit of smoke while running. Any ideas?

This is normal, unburnt fuel and oil with smoke until engine warms up. A cold engine can waste up to 40 % of fuel during warm up.

Great, I thought It might be leaking. How long does warmup usually take? I will have to find a manual so i can get specs for plug gap and fuel mixture ratio maintenence.
