Just picked up a 1978 140hp Evinrude for my rebuild project. It had no oil in the tilt and trim unit. We found that the plug for the manual release had a bad O ring. We replaced the O ring and filled it with standard hydraulic oil and it works fine now. My question is, will this oil be OK or should I replace it with something special?

Re: Oil for tilt and trim unit

There's an OMC tilt/trim fluid which is specified in the manuals. The generally accepted substitute is Dexron III, as it won't swell the seals etc.
