Prepping for winterizing this 99 5.0L efi bravo 3 that is new to me and realized that the oil filter is sticking straight up. Seems like there will be quite a mess when taking it off. Is there a trick or some kind of attachment that goes around it prior to loosening? Thanks Granpa

Re: Oil filter

I had a car like that, and the oil actually drained when the engine was off, so there was no mess.

Re: Oil filter

grandpa, take a sharp tool and punch a hole in the top of it ,then do the other stuff you need to do, and in approx 15 min. the filter will be empty and can be removed with little mess.

Re: Oil filter

gotta go with johnkc on this one,he nailed it except for 1 thing. You will still want to put some paper towels around and under the filter.there will be dripping, but it is better than pouring .My advise is to let it sit overnight after punching the hole and that will really reduce any mess.Charlie

Re: Oil filter

Steve's right- no mess at all.
My 2000 Merc. 5.7 has the same arrangement and I've never had a single drop of oil go where I didn't want it to go. Just keep a rag next to the filter base as you remove it. Piece of cake!

Re: Oil filter

OK, guys, mine is upside down also. Now am I right here?

#1 Start engine on water hose, let oil get warm, or operating temperature.
#2 Kill engine, then start draining oil (I have the hose under the engine, that runs out the drain hole)
#3 Put hole in top of Oil filter with ***** punch.
#4 Let it drain (For a long time, Possibly Overnight?)
#5 Use towel remove old Oil Filter.
#6 Put new one on, using film of oil around the new filter's rubber ring, so it will seal good.
#7 Put plug back in oil drain hose, and route back into Boats Drain hole.
#8 Refill with recomended Oil, to recomended level.
#9 Restart on hose, kill and recheck recomended oil level is correct.

This is for a 2003 Mercruiser 350 Mag.

Grandpa I didn't mean to jump your thread, but if yours is comparable, this is what I was told was the sequence. Did I leave anything out guys?

Re: Oil filter

Thanks guys. I love this site. I have yet to see a problem described that someone didn't have, at least, a possible solution for. Can't wait to stab my filter. They cured most of those desires up at the nervous hospital. Granpa

Re: Oil filter

Granpa, before you change it, make sure one of these guys that has done this before, agrees or approves of my list. I have not changed my oil yet. Just made 80 hours on it Yesterday. I was just told and accumulated this was the proceedure.

Also I am just about positive I typed ***** Punch or Pr-ck Punch. Is Pr-ck a sensored word on this site? I mean from the time I was a squirt, my Dad taught me it was called a ***** Punch. If I get the ***** Punch typed in again, I guess I'll know that Pr-ck is sensored on this site :D

Granpa, I just called my Dad, he Laughed his rear off, he said to tell you, because we can't use that other sensored tool name, it has also been called a drill set, or a Scratch All, So grab that tool, by which ever name you want to call it and Stab away! ;)
