Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

Hey guys was looking at doing a breakin oil change here this weekend - and it occurred to me that I don't recall seeing one in - all the time i have had my head in the bilge area (looking for blue drains, spraying with 'anti-corrosion', greasing battery cables, drying bilge)....

Curious if anyone with a 2012 (or near) Q5 - where is it? pain? could you fit a longer filter on there easy?

Model? 35-8830702k

from what i can tell that is considered a 'short' filter? looking at using a Napa or Wix equivalent but in a long body if possible...

Re: Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

Nope - definitly not there... did a quick look when i had a chance today. Couldn't spot it...

Only thing i spotted was on the back right side of engine but looked like a spark plug went into it...and was skinnier then a filter..

isn't looking good for me.... i think it is going to be a bugger to get it out.

Can't find it in my service manual (old manual) #25 - not a good shot of the entire package with things pointed out. The oil change page just says undo - oil new gasket and screw in hand tight.... Doesn't mention a model or location.

Parts exploded view just shows it pretty much all by itself (i can't tell where it would be anyhow)

No one with a 4.3L Q5 that has changed the oil??

Is that a ign coil on the upper right rear of the engine?

Re: Oil Filter ? AQUI !?!

Well anyone that is looking for it...

It is on the lower right side of engine - its very black with little/no markings so it really blends in without good light. It is right above all the drain lines on the right side of bilge.

good news is that it is mounted vertical and gasket/threads facing up :) Also there is plenty of room underneath it for the possibility of a slightly larger/longer filter. Ideas on a good model?

I'm surprised they're different for the MPI / non... Mine is remotely located at the top/left/front of the engine... Seen below. (2012 Tahoe, 2010 stamped engine)

Yeah yours looks quite a bit different - mine doesn't have anything on that metal bracket (where that big Caution sticker is).

I wish i had a picture to show where mine was but pretty much it is very low on the engine on the back right. Accessible but definitely not super easy - although i would take the vertical filter (hard to get at) vs the upside-down filter (easy to get at) --- at least that is what i think. I will be changing my break-in oil this week hopefully - i'll see how it goes.

ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE LONGER REPLACEMENT FILTER IS FOR THE 2010 4.3L TKS 190hp? Stock is 35-883702k? Otherwise i guess i'll post this in the merc section.

I'm in the neighborhood of 16-17h so I'm not too far behind you... I bought an oil extractor and lower unit pump for gear lube. I just need to pick up some oil/gear lube and I'll be set for my 20h

Oil extractor? It just drains out the back out of the metal square drain (tube pulls out)

I am at est.16-17 also - but have a big trip coming with MANY hours. So figured i would do it before hand because after installing my hour meter before my last outing i realized i might have underestimated a lot of my trips. Figured i would be proactive since i don't want to be thinking about it at all as I'm pulling wakeboarders or running WOT....

Still have to decide if i am going to change oil again at winterization ....

I've done a bit of reading/watching videos of changing the oil in these things and using the lower drain hole apparently can take a very long time to drain. So I bought a pump to pump out through the dipstick which seems to be a popular choice.

I had some warranty work done, and I had the dealer check mine and I was at 13 hours which put me at right at 2h per 'trip' average. I've done 2 additional trips since then and the second one was a little shorter than normal. I plan to get a Smartcraft gauge that shows actual engine hours something (probably this winter)

Ideally that answer is yes... As soon as you run the motor the oil will become contaminated with "stuff" that when just sitting is not supposed to be good. I don't have any good links about this handy, but I believe you are better off with fresh oil going into storage.

Re: Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

correct....SSSSSSSLLLLLLLOOOOWWWWW

warmed her up for a few minutes last night at fast idle - and then drained with cap vented and wow it was a very slow trickle. around 1/6 the speed of me pissin - haha Pretty much the smallest flow possible without it turning to drips.

I ran into a big situation - a few actually
A.) Filter is not the same filter as listed on mercparts list based on my S/N (its a skinnier ACDELCO model from factory)
B.) It is super tight / painted on.... and since it was skinnier i couldn't use my good cup style wrench, and my strap style crushed it!

SOooo now it looks like I might have the wrong Merc filter - and going to try a 'aligator' style wrench from a friend tonight.

Otherwise i am going to bring it to dealer possibly ...

I bought filter : 35-883702K (merc) and talked to one of the dealers and said they have had issues and needed a skinnier filter (they use sierra 18-7879)

BIG HEADACHE

Re: Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

yuck... that sucks. I have two strap wrenches that I use on everything but my Tundra which I use a cup wrench. The strap wrenches are plastic handles with rubber straps each like 1/2" wide. Sometimes I need both if the filter is tight. It will dent a filter but they typically come right off.

Because my filter is easy to get to I can see the actual filter model on there now so replacement should be easy enough (I hope)

Well good news is - brought it to the dealer for them to wrench on it - took the guy a good 10-15minutes using a couple different types of metal strap wrenches and he got it off. (Was less embarrassed then if it would have taken him 10sec...) He said definitely need to be at the very top or very bottom for that type of wrench or you crush it. Very happy with the dealer for how they handled it.

I put on the the Mercury filter spec'd for the engine based on the S/N of the motor - 35-883702k ... which is different the then the factory AC Delco. Same thread/design - just slightly different body size (by millimeters).

Could definitely get the 'tall' version of the filter in there! ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE TALL VERSION IS?????

OH BTW: Took off my lower drain plug for the outdrive grease, let a couple teaspoons out to check for any water intrusion and let out possible settled particles. Also gave me a chance to clean the magnetic tip off (WOW, plenty of fine particles - good idea to clean it i would say to renew its 'filtering' capabilities).

Glad you got it changed... Were you not going to replace that fluid all together? My manual has the lower unit gear as part of the 20h service.

Re: Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

Hmmm - I guess i must have missed that in the schedule of maintenance!

I know in talking with another guy at my office that changed his and his dealer said he didn't have to on his at breakin. So i was under the impression it wasn't needed.

I guess i'll be doing it a bit later then 20 :)

I hate to change it since the fluid looked and smelled brand new... ugh. Not to mention it's priced like liquid gold...

Re: Oil Filter ? DONDE!?!

FYI - just checked my O&M manual and it doesn't mention changing the gear lube. i checked the area about break-in and after breakin service. also checked scheduled maintenance section and outdrive gear lube section.

After Break‑In Period
To help extend the life of your Mercury MerCruiser power package, follow these recommendations:
• Ensure that propeller allows the engine to operate at or near the top of the specified WOT RPM range. Refer to
Specifications and Maintenance.
• Operate the engine at 3/4 throttle or lower. Refrain from prolonged operation at wide‑open‑throttle RPM.
• Change the engine oil and oil filter. Refer to Maintenance.
• Change the transmission oil and filter. Refer to Maintenance (ZF Transmission models).1.

I changed the lower unit oil on mine at the 20 hr. break in. It is not that hard, except on the wallet at appx. $15.00 a quart, and you can see if there is any excessive metal in it or water. If you do make sure to replace the washers on both the plugs.
