Is it a good or bad idea to attach an oil drain hose to a 5.7 Mecruiser I/O oil pan plug?

Thank you.

Not bad. Better yet, get one of those quick plugs from an automotive store. Just push it in, half a turn, and the oil is coming out. Looks alot better than a hose dangling

I can't reach the drain plug so a hose is my only option, would install the hose when I remove the engine for another reason.

make sure your transom drain plug will pass a 3/4" -7/8" OD drain hose, most of them are only 1/2".

What engine and what year. Most people don't drain the oil out of their engines, they use a pump and pump it out the dipstick tube, since the 80's the dipstick tubes are even designed for this with a threaded end for a garden hose connection.
There are all kinds of oil pumps the purpose, both manual and electric,.

Mine has the garden hose fitting, I wonder how much old oil remains in the pan when you remove it from the dipstick tube though?

Doesn't matter that much - should change oil after it has came to temperature which will allow oil to be fully mixed before pumping out.

If you are a lucky soul that is able to put on more run hours then say a typical 100hr service interval... then just change a hair earlier to account for only 90% fresh oil... But service intervals are based on the assumption of pumping out.

You will see how much you get out...by how much you end up putting in. Compared that to the engine spec.

I have the hose attatched to my drain plug and it came from the factory that way and is awesome. You never get all the oil out through the dipstick tube. With the hose method you pull it out through the boats drain plug and drain the oil. Super easy and takes about 10 minutes to do a complete oil change, and most of that is getting in and out of the boat to do the filter and refill the oil. My buddy has a Volvo with a hard tube attatched to his drain plug, and it is easier than the dipstick tube thing, but it isnt as easy as the hose method.

When I installed the custom high-volume five-zone oil change system on my engines and generator, I yanked the drain plug and replaced it w/ a banjo bolt. That is plumbed-up w/ large ID hose to the manifold.

When I installed the system I put it in w/ a full sump of dirty oil. I didn't spill much.

My system sucks out eight quarts of oil in ten seconds.

Mine came with this from the factory as well, but it can be purchased as an aftermarket kit.

Has anybody made their own drain hose? Any plans?

I have one like the one from one I bought from one of the on-line marine places for about $35.

iBoats sells them and you could just buy the fitting below (right here on iBoats) and make up a suitable hose to attatch.

If you didn't use the above fitting, you would need to find something that would screw into your oil drain hole and then add fittings and a piece of hose as required. Most brass fittings are tapered pipe and wouldn't work so you would need to either make something or re-thread the hole to accommodate a pipe thread.

Certainly not impossible, but is it worth it to jump through all those hoops and spend maybe $15-20 for the fittings and hose (also assuming you don't have to buy the right size pipe tap) when you can just buy the correct hose kit for around $30? Or that fitting above for about $10+ shipping, a hose barb and hose......

You just have to ensure that you get the fitting with the correct thread.

Re: Oil Drain Hose Attached to Oil Pan Good Or Bad Idea?

i researched and bought my kit from amazon.... My intention was to be able to thread the hose out through the transom drain with a cable attached to the transom drain plug... My drain was too small (by about a 1/16th inch). Still installed the hose (and what a PITA that was!!! - probably something better to be saved for when the engine is out for other reasons) and routed it around one of the side bulheads for my engine compartment. Advantage is not having to remove the bulkhead when I want to change oil. Disadavantage is having to procure/use a suitable pump (they are cheap and plentiful when the time comes) to hook up and pump out the oil. Given the opportunity to install a drain hose again in the future...I would probably opt out and go with the dipstick-hose-pump method... JM2C. KTB

I think I've decided to go with a Fumoto F101N drain valve. I can just attach a clear tube to it and send it out of the drain in the transom. I like the idea of having a ball valve there so I don't worry about losing my oil through a broken hose.

Added the hose to my 7.4. Piece of cake now and drains the pan completely. I like the hose, others say it's a waste of time. To each his own.

The Fumoto valve with a piece of tygon is the way to go......easy, simple, secure.....yada yada
