I just purchased a 06 Tahoe Q6 with a 350, is the drain plug easily accessed at the bottom or do I have to suck it out?

It's not easy access no. Most people suck it out through the dipstick.

Run the engine until it's warm then shut it down and change the oil. You will be there all day trying to get the oil out if it's cold.

Welcome to IBOATS

Have you looked under the engine to see if you have the "teather" setup where you can pull that through the drain plug hole to possibly drain the oil?

Re: Oil change

If you see a brass plug on the bottom of the transom then it has a oil drain tube connected (like my Tahoe) - if just a normal plastic boat water drain...then pump it out.

if you let the engine come to temperature the oil comes out best. My rear oil drain tube takes about 30-45min to trickle out through the drain tube when engine has been brought to temperature. Gives me time to change lower unit grease :)

I have the plug but no drain tube :( I am installing one this time so I won't have to suck it out again.

^^^^^^
Exact same one I bought and use in my 7.4 and it does get all the oil out though you do need some patience.
I found the included hose did not reach all the way to the bottom of the oil pan in my big block and did have to add a longer section.

Re: Oil change

Thanks for all the replies. I would much rather drain from the bottom to get all the crap out of the bottom of the pan if there is any, I just purchased the boat so I'm unaware of the maintence that was performed on it before. Also I was wondering what the normal rpm is at idle, mine seems to low. Thanks again

Guess it depends on how fast you are trying to get the oil changed. My normal process is to pull the hose out, open it up and leave it there until the next day. The oil is all drained out and ready to go. Letting it sit overnight is especially useful when you don't warm the boat up before changing the oil.

I found that it drains in about 15 minutes. If the oil is hot it come pouring out of that hose. I wonder if these hoses bind up in the bilge eventually?

Its usually 40F in the garage by the time I'm ready to winterize, so it flows pretty slow ;)

What do you mean by "bind up"?

Re: Oil change

I may be stating the obvious here or just being plain dumb, but when folks drain their oil from the bottom, do they remove the oil filler cap at the top? If they don't, then perhaps that explains why the oil drains so s l o w l y.

Yes, although since my engine has an "open" ccv system it really doesn't matter. The reason the oil drains slowly is the 1/4"ish hose that the 25W oil is running out through ;)

Re: Oil change

might be some sludge build up at the bottom of the pan that not letting it flow properly. I usually drain the oil and fill it back up, let it run for a couple min and let her drain again.

Re: Oil change

kink maybe ?

Yeah, kink would be a better word. I can't really see whats under the engine in my boat. It takes a long piece of rebar wires passed from the outside to drag the line out the transom plug hole.
