What do you recommend? I'm lazy and cheap, and the hand pumps and drill pumps, even though inexpensive, look like they are too messy and too much work. I noticed on the iboats store there is a 12v pump, but I've also seen bad (and good) reviews. Just looking for opinions for the cheapest and easiest device.

I almost hate to bring this next question up, but what is everyone using for oil in their mercruiser? Please, no lectures on Mercruisers proprietery 25w40. Just want to know what you use.

No clue on pump, mine drains into the bilge and runs out the boats drain plug when I'm done I wipe out the bilge out with a handful of rags.

Castrol GTX 20-50 and an AC Delco filter.

i use 2 trash bags works awesome, alot faster then pump or hose and you can let it drain all day if you want . cheap and highly recomended . For once or twice a year bags are great.

I've seen a hose fitting threaded onto the drain plug. The hose is capped whenn running and long enough to fit through your bilge drain hole for when you want to drain the oil. Just push it through, remove the cap, and drain into a container.

Of course, if you have the room, double trash bags under the pan are much cheaper.

The drill pump fitted with a short piece of garden hose works good for me.
Screws right onto the dipstick tube and sucks it dry in a few minutes..

Straight 30 weight Rotella T sold at any auto parts store will work fine too...

Got one at the local dealership. 12v, two hoses. one feeds thru the distick tube the other goes in the pan. has 6ft or so power connections. Approx 30 bucks. Been using it for 4 years now. A little messy in the garage. I keep it in one of those big gallon size ziplocks. Not sure of the make, china made I'm sure. Cheap and easy to use, no mess in the boat. I use 15w/50 Mobile1, freshwater pleasureboat...

I made mine with a Drain plug adapter for a automatic transmission at the local auto parts store. I removed the drainplug, and ran a longer piece of fuel line from the drain plug, cut it in the middle and added a valve (for secondary insurance), and then ran a piece that is long enough to run out the back of the boat thru the plug hole. It cost me about $20 in parts, and I think now there are kits that supply everything you need.

I run Mobile 1 5w30 and a AC-DELCO filter. change it every 50 or hours.

Attwood hand pump. Screws right on. Works fine if you don't pull the top of the pump off.

quicksilver 25 - 40 or whatever is in the shop .

My boat is equipped like this. Oil changes are a breeze with this set up.
I use straight 30 or the Merc 25w 40.

If you trailer that is the easiest and best setup. I think iboats sells 'em.
Warm the oil before changing, though.

Hose from pan drain plug out the transom drain hole. Doesn't get any easier than that.

Anyone ever have any trouble with these hoses leaking oil?

Re: Oil Change Pump & Oil

merc/quicksilver 25w40. no lecture.

i used a drill pump for about 5 years. it sucked, no pun--it was hard to use and usually made a mess. this year my oil pump screen (in the pan) got clogged with some old oil gunk. pumping through the dipstick never got that junk out of there. i've been told that modern oils won't cause that kind of buildup, but mine's a 1974 and who knows what they ran? this year i drained into the bilge and let it run down into pans for 24 hours, then wiped out the bilge (tight and what a mess). next time i'll try the double garbage bags but it's so tight i'll probably spill the whole shot into the bilge anyway. i bought a drain hose kit but thought about it and the forums confirmed what i thought--the fitting sticks up into the pan somewhat so you don't get all the oil out, and the bottom oil is where the dirt and gunk is. someone, i think charlie, talked about brazing a flush fitting on the next time the pan's out, that'd be the catsass.

hey how's kato? did you find the real killer yet? lol

double or triple bags sitting on a piece of carpet, cardboard. the bags are pretty tough i never tore one. can be tight if you have no room but i think it is the best and easiest way.

Re: Oil Change Pump & Oil

i bought a 29.99 marine pump from harbor frieght tools and bought 10 feet of clear hose from home depot. installed a hise fitting on each end of pump to the goses and it screws right onto the oil dipstick tube. works great sucks the engine dry. even empties the oil filter so no more worries of a messy bilge. all u need like i said are 2 hoses one pump and 3 fittings to hook up pump to hoses and hose to oil dipstick tube screw on. beats the west marine versions for over $100 oil change can be done in less then 5 min now. if u want pics u can email me at riverboysjet460@aol.com glad to help out. thanks guys
