oil alarm on 40 hp evinrude

I have a 1997 40 hp. Evinrude with oil injection while out fishing the low oil alarm went off, i shut it down right away, my ? Is could i have drove it with low oil alarm on i wasen't far to go back to the reort so i used my trolling motor to get back, could i have run it at low speed ? Thanks in advance birkygene

Are you sure it was the low oil alarm ??? How much oil was stil in the resevoir ??

You can run an outboard on straight fuel up to 1000-1200 rpm and it won't hurt it. But don't go above it. That's the way the E-TECS are designed for running in the S.A.F.E mode.

Are you sure it was the low oil alarm ??? How much oil was stil in the resevoir ??

yes it was there was about a 1/2 to an inch of oil in the resivor
