So there is an apparent problem with snaps.
Here is my advice on snaps for your canvas cover or straps or even sling snaps for your hold-downs for your swim ladder.
Most snaps are installed from Factory with simple screw in type snaps. Sometimes not even caulked ( remember its Not the Manufacturer but the GUY who put that snap in ).
Now of course the QC ( Quality Controller ) cant pull Every snap or hardware put in the boat during the process of completion.. can not unscrew everything to make sure they were Properly sealed. ( cant control the respect of All workers in All boat plants basically ).
So its up to Us as boaters to make Sure everything is good as an end user.
There are several different Snap types.. Most of which are the normal snap screws.
But there are more..
1. Smaller threads with small shanks
2. Smaller threads with longer shanks
3. Larger ( oversize ) threads with short shanks
4. Larger threads with longer shanks
Then you have..
5. Riveted snaps
And Important is the ..
6. Threaded snaps ( they are snaps with a machine type thread that uses a nut to fasten ).
All snaps should be replaced with threaded where ever you can ! You of course have to be able to access the back side of the bolted snap to put the nut/small washer on ( sometimes have a friend help ya ).
Every season you should remove and re-bed All screw snaps.
Down side for Threaded snaps is that when you go a full buff out they should be removed ( kinda a pain ).
Hope this thread helps some questions and fills in some blanks on how to Repair a stripped out snap.
