Gross and irrelevant exaggeration, Soul Winner.

The law outlaws hate speech and behavior. The Bible is not mentioned in the law.

Unless, of course, you believe that The Bible teaches hate.

Good move, Canada :)

Re: Oh Canada.....WTH??????

OK ok ok, maybe this is just an obvious troll....my way of saying hi to JB maybe??

Anyhoo, for years I have thought that compared to todays PC world, the bible is the most hard core hate speech going. It's not tolerant, it's not inclusive. It's like the country song that goes "if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything" Principal and integrity don't fit the PC model for tolerance. That's just the way I see it. I believe it, but still in my daily live I am a servant, lowly and meek (these days, I love yu Mellow Yellow, ) and I have compassion for everyone, everyone has sin, not just gays. I don't understand how some folks take part of the message and focus on it and forget other parts of the message. I guess it's how they feel better about themselves, you know? Like "hey I may download porn on the ole computer, but at leats I ain't GAY!!!" or something like that.

I just thought this was an interesting news article. Hey JB, Do me a fav?? Change the title to something more appropriate? Or I will if I can. Can I?

JB,
I am no bible thumper, but I don't see how you can call this a "Gross and irrelevant exaggeration."

The article SW referenced stated:
Certain passages of the Bible can be construed as hate literature if placed in a particular context, according to a Canadian provincial court.

The Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatchewan upheld a 2001 ruling by the province's human rights tribunal that fined a man for submitting a newspaper ad that included citations of four Bible verses that address homosexuality
I believe that in this country this would be a clear violation of the First Amendment.

The LAW says nothing about The Bible, Joe.

The COURT merely commented that the passages selected (out of context) violated the LAW against hate literature.

To call The Bible outlawed is a gross and irrelevant exaggeration.

I understand and agree, however, the Canadian court has interpreted the law to include biblical passages.

The COURT merely commented that the passages selected (out of context) violated the LAW against hate literature
Which passage was out of context? The fact is the bible does contain passages condeming homosexuality (especially Leviticus). I'm not condoning such things. Leviticus also suggests that we should burn a cow because the "smell is pleasing to God." It also suggests that adulterers should be stoned to death. The point is that the Canadian courts have effectively placed restrictions on the free expression of biblical passages.

I believe that SW's intent was to demonstrate Canada's restrictions on freedom of expression. Quite frankly this concerns me as well. At what point will the expression of any negative opinion about the behavior of others be construed as "hate". Why do gays deserve special attention in this regard? If I express my disagreement with the policies of a liberal politician, could this be construed as hate?

Let's face it, laws are subject to interpretation, and public opinions change. Look back at the transition of Black Americans, from slavery, to segragation, to equality. Many people spoke out against equality, but since then public opinion has changed, and racial discrimination has subsequently been outlawed. At one point, segregation was a simple fact of life, but now speaking out against equality can land you in jail.

At one point, homosexuality was thought of as a gross perversion, something to be ashamed of and hidden. Nowadays, we have adopted a "live and let live" philisophy, and homosexuality is accepted. Thus speaking out against it falls under the the laws of "hate speech". Gays are not recieving special attention, it's that public opinion is changing. Can you argue that black people are recieving special attention in this regard, since it is illegal to speak out against equality for black people?

Since when? Not in this country. The First Amendment prohibits the government from banning such speech. What you are seeing is the change in public opinion regarding these issues. There is no longer anyone who believes in inequality, or if they are, they're afraid to speak out. Note: the First Amendment does not protect one from non-governmental action against the speaker. For example, the first amendment says the government cannot prohibit a bigot from carrying a white supremist sign to a NAACP rally. The first amendment does not guarantee that man protection from the resulting riot. In fact, the man may be civily liable for enciting a riot.

This issue has nothing to do with specific beliefs regarding gays or anyone else. It has everything to do with freedom of expression. I see Canada's ban on such statements as a slipery slope. Where does it end? Are Canadian citizens prohibited from making hateful statements toward anyone else? If not, why not? If so, this is a huge blow to personal liberty in Canada.

Re: Oh Canada.....WTH??????

Well....don't know if I should get into this but...

Would it be fare to say that if a preacher in Church, on Sunday, is giving a sermon about the sins of homosexuality, and uses these phrases from the bible, could that be considered hate speech and behavior? Or...would it be how the law is interperted? Or where do we or they (governments law making officals) draw the line between hate speech and behavior as opposed to just telling a homosexual that what he/she is doing is wrong and against biblical doctren? Seems to me it's going to get messy in the long run.

This is just a "curious question" looking for opinions.

Well I did do a search on google, and I did learn something. This bill simply adds "sexual orientation" to an existing law prohibiting "hate propaganda" against groups of people.
Toad, I feel for you guys up there. This is really scary in my view. Who gets to define what "propaganda" is? What groups are currently on the list? To think I was in Victoria last summer. While driving behind someone on a cell phone, I said "I hate people who talk on the phone while they drive." I'm glad I didn't say it too loud, I could have been arrested.

:D

Maybe not today Toad, but the stage is being set. Seems you guys don't take the long view of things. No Guns, now no parts of Bible. Hmm, where have I run across that scenario before?

Re: Oh Canada.....WTH??????

SoulWinner and Joe have this critter nailed. The law is a veiled attempt to suppress distribution or discussion of the biblical agenda that contrasts with contemporary social customs. You can forget about publicly proclaiming anything biblical in Canada that can be construed as non-supportive of the gay agenda, if you want to be law biding.

Joe – free speech in America is a thing of the past, but still better than in England. There are a couple organizations that monitor the freedom of speech globally. They rank America at something like 11th place globally…and falling.

EDIT: Btw, this didn’t come on suddenly in Canada. I’ve been watching it get kicked around and discusses for a couple years. It definitely originates with the desire for a direct assault on fundamental Christianity. They want the Bible censored…that’s the original agenda.

Well I feel sorry for them when they have to face the creator. I can just see them try and explain political correctness to a perfect being with ALL the power.
