OEM Starter solonoid - 1980 Merc Inline 6 115hp

Hi there,

Would anyone where I could find the OEM part number for the starter solonoid? My motor and manual are a few hours away from me.

Also, anyone the life expectancy of a starter solonoid? Base on my records the one I have is 30 years old. Would they typically just die on you or just give you intermittent connection problems?

from my experience the connections tend to loosen up and the posts will sometimes strip inside the plastic housing

There are 3 different serial number ranges for that motor and all of them use different solenoids, to get the correct one you need a serial number or the part number off the old one.

I should have that serial number, is there a resource I can reference for this information?

I had a bad solenoid that clicked but had no continuity between the large posts so I drilled out the four rivets that held it together and found inside a large copper disk. The disk makes contact across two copper points and was corroded, so I cleaned it with a dremel wire wheel tool. I reassembled the unit using RTV and the original gasket and replaced the rivets with stainless steel screws. It works fine and I can disassemble if I need to. You could use stainless rivets if you wanted to!
I did this just to see if I could.
