I remember using 9600 baud rate modems. At the time I though it was pretty fast, compared to 4800.

My first modem was an acoustical where you hand dialed then place the hand-set into the rubber cups. Two speed, 150 or 300 baud if the connection was good. I later bought a used 1200for 20 bucks and thought I had gone to heaven.
