Re: oddjobs troll

Well, someone has to pay for all the debts we are incurring with all of this spending we are doing.

Raise the exemption to 5 million. Change the tax code so someone can pass on a family farm or a small business tax free. (If they can't already). (Economists in Iowa looked, and they could not find a single farm that was sold solely to pay the taxes, BTW)

But someone has to pay, or we have to spend dramatically less. And that's a good idea, but someone has to decide what is cut

I kind of like the spend less theory. Theres tons of fat in the govt. "Deciding what is cut" should be simple if people keep emotion out of the decision. Logic was lost in governmental debate many moons ago.

Too often do I hear local and State governments saying "Well, we have to spend this money on X because if we don't we'll lose the money from the Feds." If we don't have a NEED for it, why are we trying to find a way to spend it?

Force every taxpayer to write a check every two weeks to the government instead of them automatically taking it out -- I bet the tunes from that old radio would change.

Somehow,I have a hard time believing that that money had been taxed once already. It may very well be money that slipped through the loopholes made for the rich.

Thats insane... how many times do you hear of non-millionaires in the news because they are going to jail for tax evasion.

My Dad just got an fricking IRS enema because be owned a horse farm that was also a business... they told him that horse farms are "a great way to hide money." He wishes right there were loopholes for the rich.

Now how would you know that? :D

Personally ,I place no value whatsoever on approval/disapproval polls.I guess someone must though or whoever they are that tally this hogwash wouldn't keep releasing this useless and potentially biased information bordering on propaganda.

Re: oddjobs troll

Lots of people put a lot of value on polls. Every political party does them, Every large advertiser does them. They can indeed be manipulated, of course, but accurately done they are amazingly representative of opinions at the time. Those opinions may or may not have value/a basis in reality, but the polls represent what people think at the time.

As far as Iraq goes, I do really hope we are turning a corner. We've turned as many corners in this thing as a NASCAR car, and I fear, just like them, if you keep turning corners, it's likely you're going in a big circle.

I really do hope this time is different, but time will tell.

PW, I know you have mentioned polls when it suits your point here at DC many times. Next time you do could you post the background you just stated here? just so to help the free thinkers in all? :)

What part of the statement do you disagree with, OJ? I am curious.

The two truths about statistics:

1. You can get them to say anything you want them to say.

2. They never lie.

I didnt disagree PW with your point. Just post it again when YOU reference a poll is all I was saying. Dont be like the drive-by media and leave it conveniently out.

Re: oddjobs troll

ok fair enough

I rarely refer to polls, as they don't mean much to me, as my opinions are mine, it doesn't matter to me particularly what other people think, and it never bothers me if it happens that I take an unpopular position on any particular issue.

Polls are important come election time, of course, and they are informative to some degree in order to see what may be driving opinions out there, but they don't frame the debate, and while logical, informed arguments can alter my opinion and get me to change my mind at times, never will poll results do the same, whatever they may be.
