Odd-ball Transom Question

I've removed the transom from my 1968 Larson Volero, but the fiberglass resin that coated the transom is glued to the outer shell of the boat. It seems to be a strong bond. The old transom was rotten and had delaminated. Does this need to be ground out before I install the new transom? Or can I just adhere to it? I can attach pictures if it would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Odd-ball Transom Question

Strip the old wood right away to expose the fiberglass....... maybe a bit if chiseling is needed but your transom will be right ;)

Ayuh,... It needs to be ground reasonably smooth for the new bond to work...

Re: Odd-ball Transom Question

Thanks for the earlier comments. I've added a picture so you see can see what I'm talking about. As you can see, all that is left of the wood transom is the fiberglass resin that is affixed to the hull. So if I understand I should ground this surface down and then fiberglass in the new transom, and it will glue to old surface. Is this correct? Thanks in advance.

Re: Odd-ball Transom Question

Hello Mfallesen..

All the white glass should be removed ( grinding involved ).

The inside of your transom should be as Flat as possible before installation ( as Bondo said ). You may have to fill some lowes with resin/glass filler depending on how your grinding goes.

And All the surface should be sanded/grind to at Most 40 grit ( I prefer 24-36 ).

Cheers YD.

Re: Odd-ball Transom Question

Hey! I have same year and model...Larson Volero 177. I bought it as a project boat last summer...came up with some oddities such as transom and the stringer. It took me forever to get the foam out. Right now the stringer shell is hollow. I am pondering whether to cut them out or just pour the seacast ($$$) I read the other thread...it was mentioned once the fiberglass delaminated, it should be removed. I am curious what you will do about the stringer. Keep in touch. Mrgintz of Wisc.
