i have a Johnson Oceanpro 175, model j175vxsss with 150 hours on it. lightly used, professionally maintained. Starts/runs great EXCEPT, after it has run about 30 minutes and shut it off then wait maybe 15 minutes or more and restart, it will catch fine, but then cough, spit and die, sometimes immediately, sometimes up to 30 seconds later. Sometimes i can put it in neutral and rev it to maybe 2000rpm and it will then run, but very roughly and continue spitting until finally it keeps going long enough to get up on plane and it goes fine until shut off and then same routine happens again. if i depress key, it dies immediately and then starts real hard. unitil it finally gets going (which has taken as long as 30 minutes) exhaust smells very rich. The problem has gone or several seasons. the regular mechanic has changed plugs and____??___ but not solved the problem. What do you suggest to fix this. my wife and kids are almost to the point of refusing to get in to the boat
thanks in advance

sounds like the carbs need a good rebuild check your plugs are they oily and dark although coughing and spitting means a lean condition

The problem has gone on for several seasons.

Only 150 hours on it after "several seasons"? I'm not familiar with your motor, but it sounds like a spark issue rather than a carb issue. The 'rich smell' makes me think that raw fuel is going out the exhaust rather than being burned in the cylinders.
