I've been chasing a intermittent starting for a month or so and need some help. Recently motor has been difficult or impossible to start. l pulled plugs and cleaned and checked and no spark. Thinking ignition I replaced key switch as it was jumpy on OHM meter. No change. Pulled plugs again - no spark. Put a shot of carb cleaner in each cylinder put plugs back in and started right up and ran like top for three hours on water with over 1 hour at idle speed. No load up, no problems. A week later won't start. Pulled plugs and cleaned - no luck. When I can get it to start it really smoked heavily so I disconnected the VRO and went pre-mix. VRO lines plugged securely - no air leaks. Removed power pack and found one pinched, but not broken or shorted wire. I also replaced solenoid primer gasket. One question on this - on my old gasket, the white nylon valve pin extended vertically through the center of the gasket. The new gasket had the middle hole plugged and dealer said pin was not suppose to go through it. As soon as I installed it, the pin punched up through the hole just like the old one. I really think this is correct as the seal appears to be the tapered thicker part of the pin against the underside of the gasket.
I hate intermittent problems - rather just have it completely break. My batteries load check good, but I have read that these motors require 300 to 350 rpm to generate spark.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Re: Ocean Pro Starting Problem

Forgot to mention - once it starts, it will restart nearly instantly - less than one second on the key and it starts as it always has. Problem seems to come up after sitting even just overnight.

we seem to have the same problem my friend and i also replaced a few things in my primer solenoid assembly. i have a 1997 evinrude 60 degree looper v4 90 hp. i do not have the reason for this cold start issue, however i have learned a way to get her running when shes cold.. and like you said after that, she starts up all night with one turn of the key. unfortunetly you need to people for this (cold start procedure) that both you and i have. take of the cover and locate the linkage that connects both sides of the carb butterflys. you will need to manualy give that some play while your buddy starts the key at ur command. you may need to slowly give the timming lever some play at the same time, after a few goes she will start right up, while you are manually slightly holding the butterflys open have your buddy put the motor into neutral with a bit of gas so she stays running, at this point the engine will warm up and u can slowly bring her back down to neutral. this has seemed to help me, i would love to figure out the root of the problem becasue my engine never did this before. hope this helps, good luck.

Why not start a new thread,
State engine, yr ,hp and model number.
Then symptoms.
Meantime, order the factory service book from a dealer, not seloc or clymer.
An outboard engine must be set up by the book properly , or pay a pro.
