I have an ocean pro 115 and I believe it's a 1995 model. Having checked the battery voltage I get a constant 12.6V running and stopped. I can't find any specific info on my engine (ie. wiring diagrams/wire colors, where to find the regulator etc.). Any diagrams or help specific to my engine would be really apreciated. Oh, and the tach is dead too if that helps .
TIA.

Re: Ocean Pro 115 '95 Battery not charging

your rectifier fried probably.....

you take the plastic cover on top off and you will see it sitting on the top of the block . under it is a water passage area...many times when they go bad you will see the black insides ooze out of the wire entrances ( its all epoxied in)

the motor runs fine, you just have no tach, and you wont be rehcarging your battery....

four bolts is all that holds it in, and the wire connectors

good luck

Re: Ocean Pro 115 '95 Battery not charging

Thanks Bob,

I've located the part with the wires protruding from what looks like translucent green silicon (not hard like epoxy). I haven't yet taken the four bolts off and removed the part, but will try that next and look for visual damage.
Any tips on how to test the recitifier? (there's no black ooze that I can see).

Thanks again Bob,
Peter.

Peter, Testing the VR is easy. Start the motor on the flusher or in the water. Put a voltmeter on the battery and note the voltage. Now plug in a load of some kind (spotlight, running lights, stereo), and see if the voltage goes down. If so, rev the motor a bit and see if the voltage goes back up. if the voltage goes back up, or doesn't go down when the load is applied, the VR is working and the battery is changing. That system can charge 35A, so find a decent sized load for the test.

Re: Ocean Pro 115 '95 Battery not charging

Thanks Chris,

I'm already 99% sure that the battery is not charging having measured the battery voltage to be around 12.6V with the engine running (and rev'ing) [unloaded battery voltage is the same]. I guess that my test is equivalent to your 'extra load test'. I'm leaning towards Bobs theory that it's the rectifier that's faulty. I was just looking for a way to target the rectifier. I've now extracted the sealed block with the 5 wires (4+gnd?) and I'm getting open circuit readings between the yellow/grey cable and ground in both directions. So it looks as though it could be the diodes/MOSFETs inside the rectifier?

If it isn't charging it is either the rectifier or the stator. I would say it the rectifier based on your posts. No Tach and no voltage. You can verify the stator is good by testing the two yellow wires going to it. There should be low resistance between the two yellows and high resistance from either yellow to ground.

Here is Joe's simple instructions for testing the rectifier.

Re: Ocean Pro 115 '95 Battery not charging

I've made some progress since my last post...

0. Found the official service guide in a breakers yard! ?25 GBP
1. Stator seems ok, resistance is correct, AC voltgage on yellow wires looks correct and no ground shorts.
2. Bench tests on rectifier unit all pass ok. Diodes present and correct at least. No ground shorts.
3. Running tests show battery voltage on purple wire (supply?) ok. Grey (tacho) wire has nothing. Battery charging current = zero!
4. Have swapped out old unit for replacement from breakers yard (supposedly ok)...no change in results.

I've tried all tests I can think of and it seems that both units are faulty..but these seems unlikely somehow...very reluctant to pay for a 3rd unit if the fault is elsewhere. I have access to an oscilloscope and have looked at AC input to the recitfier from the stator and that looks good.

I'm thinking of getting the unit back on the bench and feeding it with the output from a mains transformer with a 50Hz/12VAC ouput to simulate the stator. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks everybody.
Peter.

If you stator is good and you are not seeing any voltage on the red wire out of the rectifier then it is dead.
