Re: Nyloboard? Anyone use it?

Hi Guys:

I looked at the Nyloboard website and decided against it on the grounds that it's too expensive for a back yard boat guy like me to replace a plywood deck. The plywood in my deck was 30 years old and poorly installed. The new deck is properly installed so I'm looking for another 30 years!
I am a big fan of Starboard brand marine material and will continue to use it for small projects on the boat. The problem as I see it with all synthetic board products in that they "slump". That is, there own weight tends to make the material sag between supports. If you made a deck from Starboard the supports would need to be too close together.
I'm also a big fan of Trex outdoor deck lumber. It can be purchased from the big box stores quite reasonably. Still slumps though, especially in the warm weather.

There are some "plastic boards" that can work for some applications, but I don't count TREX as one of them. It's made from recycled junk plastic, plastic that was never formulated to be used outside and exposed to high heat and low temperatures, let alone UV rays. Then they add junk wood into the mix, just the product you're trying to eliminate.

What you end up with is a low strength, high cost and flimsy, heat, UV and water sensitive product that will develop mold and change shape. It is then wrapped in the "green" recycled marketing to make people feel better about it.

I did a great deal of research on this type of decking before I built mine. Friends that have TREX report all sorts of issues, so far the fake wood I purchased has performed better than expected and I have no complaints.
