You could turn that 8 into a 9.8 if that's possible. At least on newer engines it's a carb swap . You can't turn a 8 into a 9.9, different HP powerheads.

No. The 9.8 carb will only work for SN 77531 and above.

hi, getting back to this quesition, i have a car mechanic here that says i could change the carb on this to a 9.8 but maybe as he isn't a outboard mechinic i shouldn
t waste my money.

What is the difference between these serial numbers and why wouldn't the new carb fit? is there anything that can changed to make it fit ?

WHY, Find another project, or buy a bigger motor

because if i can change the carb i get a bitter motor, not easy to find a decent outboard around here, especially not a light two stroke motor. Alos i am not rich i am a DIY kind of guy and work with what i have, changing that about myself would include a complete lifestyle change and one i wouldn't enjoy.

Keep the motor you have the 1.8 hp you will gain will not make a huge difference in the power if any. Find a tiny tach and and get your motor propped right to run at the top of it's RPM range with a light load.
