85hp evinrudeOK was having firing problems cut the kill switch wire .got great fire.now when it starts its very fast idle and the idle lever does not makes a difference no matter where I move it .and to kill it I've been having to full choke it

Is your carb adjusted right? Idle speed right?

Where did you cut the kill switch wire? Did you have the control box apart when working on the motor to check wiring at ignition switch? If so I would suspect the problem is in the control box.

I cut it on to of motor area where it already had a frayed spot before it goes into power pack .I'm assuming it is in the control box too.since I had to recover it out of the water recently.im thinking new ignition switch

Yes and I started it 2 days after.. now I replaced the ignition switch ,and it was doing fine and now it quit firing and I had to cut the wire again.thinking I just might make my own kill switch

There is a Rule of Thumb for recovered motors, Fresh Water, unless there is dirt and silt under the cowl, get it running within an hour or two, or expect to take it apart. If there is Silt, or it was Salt Water, the engine has to come apart for a proper cleaning. Waiting two days after recovery before teardown didn't help. You could have taken the motor off the boat and stood it on its head in a tub deep enough to keep the powerhead under water. And opened the control box to dry out after spraying the internals with Water Dispersant.
Oh, and by running, I didn't mean Start it up and say 'Oh it runs' and shut it off. It needs to be run for at least an hour at higher than Idle, so it gets warm enough to dry out the water inside.

Have worked on a motor 24 HRS after recovery and corrosion marks were visible on crankshaft.----Have worked on a motor that was submerged in fresh water for 3 weeks.----Every passage way in the motor filled with sand.-----But not a mark or damage visible on any bearings.

I remember recently in my 25hp 1969 or is it 1970 OMC service manual there is a section about submerged engine. I can't remember exactly but I was thinking it said a day or two in fresh without silt like said it's usually OK as has been mentioned, but salt or the other situations disassembly is needed. Just throwing out there that OMC has a spec printed on this. But I personally have no real world experience with this.

They say that if you can not get the motor running for what ever reason.-----" put it back , submerged into the water "-----Then find help to get it running.

This is good info. So when a motor is submerged, you're supposed to :

Run it right away as soon as possible.

If you can't get it running, put it back underwater and get someone who can get it running as soon as possbile.

Gee, I dropped my fat-fifty into saltwater while running on plane. It was underwater for 60 hours. I pulled the crankcase cover and pushed some heavy oil-gas mix thru it, cleaned the starter, distributor, carb and reassembled. I hade no hope of it working again, but I was able to pull start it. amazing no bent rods or other damage. It ran normal for years, until I gave it away.

Try that with a modern engine. It will be scrap.

The fat 50 was assembled with the same pistons as the 35 HP of the day.-----And the gears and bearings in that gearcase are capable of surviving a small atomic bomb.-----The gears bearings on a modern 50 HP are flimsy in comparison..

Years ago my elderly father took his boat to Canada. He never used it but my son and I did, actually kept it at my sons place. Well upon my fathers return he dropped the boat off late at night. In the morning my son called me and said I should come right over. When I pulled into the driveway first thing I saw was the transducer hanging by the wire off the transom. Next obvious thing was a big hole chewed through the carpet on the deck and splintered wood where the trolling motor prop was. Somehow it must have been running on the deck. Next We saw the lower unit on the Johnson 25 was JB welded and come to find out that at one point the whole motor was on the bottom of the lake. He told us the guy at the camp where they were staying got it running. Despite being submerged we ran that thing for a few more years.
He never came clean and told us what really happened. All he would say was it was the other guys fault, took the story to the grave with him.
