The key thing to note here is NOT that she is a former Miss America, but that she is a Kentuckian. When we aren't watching cars rust or growing our burley crop , we shoot varmints, or thieves, or liber....uh, never mind.

No he didn't. Matter of fact, in the latter 1700's when Kentucky was getting a might bit crowded he lit out for Missourri, and the wide open spaces. For my money though, when I want to think about a REAL Ky character, i think of Simon Kenton. He made Dan'l B look like a wuss. The two were friends too. Not many people know about him, and he was MORE of a frontiersman IMHO. Maybe Miss America 1944 is related to one or the other?

The old lady can keep her gun a few more years.She was very lucky that the thieves were not armed.
What worries me is that you guys would not take the guns away from people like the Virginia Tech mass murderer.
Although this armed old lady story happened well before the mass murder it did not make the papers.Now that gun control is on the front pages again,the old lady story was dug up.
That does goes to show the long arm of the NRA,which will go a long way to keep its business viable

Doesn't matter...The people who want to do bad things will always find a way, and the people who want to protect themselves would have to face those bad people with a diminished ability to protect themselves. Guns could have been banned ten years ago, and Virginia Tech would have still happened. If not with guns, then explosives, or maybe stealing a tank and driving it through the school. Psychosis always finds a way....

There are plenty of ways for someone over the edge to kill. If it wasn't guns, it would've been bombs. If it wasn't explosives, it'd have been a car smashing into a crowd. We cannot use this tragedy as a deciding factor in anything. It's an anomoly. What we can't take our eyes off of are the everyday gun deaths whose annual totals dwarf the 32 here. But even then, isn't it really mental health that needs at least as much attention as gun control? That always seems to be first on the Republican chopping block when it comes to funding such programs. If only they'd invest as much time and energy into promoting mental health as they spend on defeating gun control.

JB was correct. Allan Eckert's account of westward expansion and manifest destiny begins with "The Frontiersman" and continues with 5 more books. All are written in a narrative style that makes the historical text easy reading if you aren't normally interested in history. Excellent reading and factual to boot.

Reference Cincinatti's German heritage, the Ky city of Newport is just across the river. Next to the Newport Aquarium the German company that owns the Munich HofBrau House (think real Munchen Oktoberfest) opened the first HofBrau house outside of Germany. They are now expanding and opening another one in Sin City and elsewhere from what I understand.
If you're ever near Cincinatti and you like fresh, locally brewed lager's and pilsners, even a weizen beer or two and love German food, you have to check that Hofbrau house out. Nothing like a knockwurst, rot kohl and a good brotchen. Washed down with a good pils.

Chivington's "volunteers" murdered several hundred friendly Cheyenne at Sand Creek.

The 7th Cavalry murdered 180 disarmed Lakota at Wounded Knee.

Those were called "battles", because they were committed by soldiers.

About 150 disarmed travelers were murdered by religious extremists at Mountain Meadows.

Don't remember who said it, but "Believe nothing you read and only half of what you see." was good advice.
