Re: Not sure what Mariner engine I actually purchased!!!

A buddy just told me to always use the number on the swivel bracket because they have probably "used the same block for the last 15 years".... I can kind of see his point, but not sure if I'm buying it or not.

Is there any other way to positively ID the engine, or is the number on the block it?

News is a bit discouraging, but may not be a problem, if it runs well.

and the boat identification number engraved
on the stern starboard indicate it is a 200 C,
which according to NADA book, model 200 C
would have a 200 HP engine.

Those numbers, indicate the MAXIMUM hp the hull was rated for, not what it came with.

Likelihood is, at some point, they blew the motor.
Took it in to replace the powerhead, and were sold a smaller one.
Maybe they knew it, maybe they didn't.

10-4 Roscoe. I agree that is a maximum HP rating for that particular boat..... still frustating like you said. Thought I had a big honking motor, now reality is, not so.

Hoping to put her in the water tomorrow for the first time and do a little run about close to shore so I don't have to paddle very far if something happens. I really don't have any reason to believe there's anything wrong with the motor, all this revelation is just unnerving!

Your "buddie" is a little lost. Between '83 and "90 they made several different blocks/front half combinations. Then in late '90 they all changed again. In '91 a coupla those went away. After '91 they were back ta 'bout 3 or 4. Then came tha o-ring blocks in 2000. ALWAYS use tha block serial number if it has one unless ya know its a heinz 57 motor. Then "experience" kicks in. They're are a LOT of parts that will interchange with all tha years but if ya gotta go strickly what tha book says ya might get in trouble. Hope it runs well for ya............

That is definitely a pre 89 or so motor. Anything after that will be a fat block with one piece heads. You clamp might say 200 HP because that what came on it originally but just a quick glance at the motor tells me its a pre 90 powerhead on there now.

Agree with Ddog on a old 150 as it has the vertical reeds, WH-29 carbs and someone forgot to take the clamshell support bracket off the air cover, 2 peice heads.

Seems to be clear to me at this point it is a 150 hp engine from the 80's.... if I look at Master Tech Marine website it puts that serial number range for a 150 to be 1983. Not sure how valuable it is at this point in the game to know exactly what year the motor is, but is there any better way?

There is a better that started a few years later where you could actually track the build by the serial number. In your case you have what you have.

One thing. If you can nail down tha "first" year of oil injection and "second generation" block (can't remember for sure), which happened at tha same time, you will have tha year of your motor...........It was late '83/early '84 was first oil injection/second gen. block I saw..........Just something else ya can do in your "spare" time

Dukedog.... not smart enough to understand where to look. Can you help again? Is it supposed to be near where the block serial number is?

In your post #7 there are five pictures. In tha 4th picture (3rd in group of 3) you can see tha "advance timing arm". It has a bend in it right before it connects to tha trigger. Right behind that bend there are six numbers stamped on tha block in a vertical orientation. That's m, d, y.........

Don't think so. They may be on tha cylinder part of tha block, not tha flange...........Sometimes they get a little weak with tha hammer/punch so they may be hard ta see.

Re: Not sure what Mariner engine I actually purchased!!!

Not to disappoint anyone, but I can't find that dang number to save my life. I took a rag and wiped the snot off the block everywhere in that general area I could get to and didn't see anything. The only numbers I can find anywhere around the bend in the timing arm is what I posted yesterday.

Gotta go back to work on Monday to support my hobbies (especially this newest one). If I don't get back to you all for a while, much appreciate the help and encouragement you've given me.
