I have a mercury outboard it is labeled 7.5 but the water pump I had to get is for a 20 hp, the serial number is 4354934 and it says thunder bolt ign. on the cover. I got the motor for free and trying to get it going. back in the 1970's in Maryland if it was under a certain hp it didn't have to be registered so im wondering if the stickers got change or is it something else. any help would be greatful thanks brian

the stickers on the motor are silver and look just like the 7.5 stickers but I do have the choke sticker from the 20hp also. so I'm still confused.

Not really. The way place to identify is by the carb number. If the number on the carb is BA-? then it's a 20hp, if it's BB-? then it's a 7.5hp...

Just had another look at the pictures... You got lucky. I was able to see a part number on the head cover, 1022-xxx. That makes it a 20hp. If it was a 7.5 the part number on that plate would be 1019-xxx....

According to the serial # it is a 76.-------Parts are looked up / ordered using the serial # not by the year.

I'll check the serial number once I get home, give you a year.

When replacing the water pump impeller for the motor, be sure to take the old impeller with you to make sure you get the correct one to fit. If some one has worked on the LU, they might have changed it or replaced it with a different one. There are two different inside diameters for the older 20hp Mercs that could fit. JMO
