88/85Force.Good compression.
I'm setting up a block I had in the shed and put a complete(supposed to be good) wiring wiring system on the motor.
Everything went on right and I have spark.
I checked TDC and it's right.I have the tool for finding it.
On the flywheel it's the single hash mark a couple of inches away from the timing marks.
Now the fun part???
When setting static timing.I hook up the light and ground the plugs etc.Advance the throttle.
The motor turns and I hit it with the timming light and the hash marks light up like they are supposed to but they are about a 1/3 of the way around to the right on the flywheel. That's about 12" away from the timming mark.
I checked the wiring and it matches the other 2 motors I have.
Got my test meter back from ES and gonna do some tests on the trigger.

OK rack your brains and tell me what's up??
Never had this problem before!!!

Re: Here's a puzzler???

I think you're on the right track. Sounds like something is up with either the trigger itself not oriented correctly under the flywheel (kind of hard to do) or the trigger wiring? If I recall, and the old brain isn't what it used to be, but aren't #1 and #3 trigger wires the same color (Org/Grn)?

Jerry: Pull the flywheel and check it against a known 3 or 4 cylinder one. The 2 cylinder flywheel looks exactly the same BUT the trigger magnet is placed differently related to the keyway. A 2 cylinder flywheel will put timing off by about 90 degrees.

Re: Here's a puzzler???

Second and third flywheel change,no difference.
Have another,will compare again???
I have a 2cyl wheel. It looks almost the same.No timing marks just 2 hash marks about 3-4 inches apart.
I put it on first(grabbed wrong one)and it just backfires.
Might pull the one off my motor.
Almost impossible to put the trigger on wrong.Once you hook up the linkage there is only one way it fits.
Besides it matches the other 2 motors.
Does it matter if the magnet has been reglued?
It fell out and I cleaned it up and reglued.
I don't think it has to be in any special way.
I don't think so but just trying to figure out ANYTHING!!!J

I don't think the flexible "strip" stator magnet has any affect on the timing. I think I would try a know 85HP flywheel. If no difference, then I'd look at the wiring.

That's what i thought too, just grasping at straws!!!!
Someone post a pic of the flywheel, upside down??With the timing marks showing.
I have a few and I think I have the right one

Re: Here's a puzzler???

I have a flywheel off of a 1988 125 HP motor. From the parts listings as far as I can tell, it is the same P/N for an 85 HP motor too. Anyways, here are some pictures.

TDC timing mark on the flywheel is exactly opposite of the keyway shaft groove and the timing marks.

This shows the way the trigger magnets are aligned with the keyway groove.

Another picture of the trigger magnet. My finger on the very left is marking the TDC mark on the flywheel.

Hope this helps.

Re: Here's a puzzler???

With three different flywheels tried, let's assume that that is not the problem.

Triggers may be wired correctly but are the CD boxes wired correctly and do the correct coils mate with them? Check timing on all three cylinders at idle. (because it will be close to 0 degrees advance) Since firing order is 1, 2, 3, each one should be 120 degrees later than the previous. If not, then one of the boxes or coils is transposed. Example: If #1 is about 120 degrees early and #2 is right on, then some wiring is transposed in the top box (assuming the top box services the top two cylinders)

If that is the problem you may have a CD box with the wire colors transposed---It would not surprise me, stranger things have happened!

Re: Here's a puzzler???

Any one have the correct wiring diagram for the 88/85.
I have the one posted on the side of the motor,it only covers the trigger and stator.
Wanna make sure of the wiring from the coils to the packs and back to the bussbar,
I had a 88/85 factory manual.
Loaned it to a friend and he returned it a month later.I just put it away and didin't look at it.
Turns out it was a factory manual for a 150 so it covers a lot just not for my motors.J

Sitting here looking at the diagram in the OEM manual. With my computer skills, I can print it and snail mail it to you. Fast enough?

Re: Not a puzzler NOW!!Here's a puzzler???

Fixxed!!!
I started with a complete wiring system.Bought from a fellow,he says it came off a 88/87 85hp.
Said it was ok as it blew a piston.

So I put it on and nothing worked the way it's supposed too.
Timing off and not firing on other cylinders ETC.

So I finnaly got my DVA meter back from the shop.
Then I started troubleshooting.
I check the wiring. The whole system was wire backwards or just wrong.
I figured it out and put it straight.Still no fire on 1@2
Then to the basics.
Stator wired wrong. Then tested.Green wires tested ok.
Blue to yellow tested open. Then tested again and tested ok.?????
Got to looking and had to replace all the connectors on the stator.
Then it tested OK!!!
Then the trigger.Same,same.Replaced all the connectors.Tested OK!!!
Then got to testing the pack. The connectors came loose in my fingers.
I replaced all the connectors and the pack still tested BAD!!!
Had a backup pack.Installed it and tested.Tested good!!!
Got it all wired right and tested for spark.OK.
Hooked up the gas and water.
IT"S ALIVE!!!!

Really glad I ain't paying someone to work on this bugger.

Running great.

Thanks for the help,FrankA,pnwboat,foodfisher.
Thanks for the pics and the wiring diagram.

They say they might open the Red Snapper season.I just might get out there.
You guys get this way, come on over and we'll go fishing!!!

THANKS AGAIN!!!
