Grandx... What would make noodling illegal or
something that one would want to hide?

grandx ----> there is nothing illegal about noodling here in oklahoma. It is a legal and recognized method of fishing here. the only catch is that you must not use this method to take a game fish. we have certain fish that are classified as non-game fish and game fish.

Game fish
Bass
crappie
Forked tailed catfish Channels and Blues
stripers
white bass
etc.
Non Game fish
Flathead catfish
bullhead catfish Mudcats
carp
etc.

All the fish that i have ever noodled are flatheads(best eatn any way). there is nothing that i need to watch when i post on the web. all are legal.

Wikelam,
I guess it's only us Texans who can't post the pics of cats caught by hand, I should of thought about that before I posted. Guess each state sees things a little different, they do let us feed our deer before we shoot them, and I know that'll get you some pokey time other places.... It is illegal here, as well as shocking them. All species of cats are considered "game fish" in TX, except maybe mudcats. I've never done it, probably would if given the oportunity but I would feel more comfortable doing it in OK.

Re: Noodling (Grabbling) for catfish

I am not a native to Oklahoma, but have lived here about 4 years now. Originally from Pittsburgh area of PA (northside). Anyway, I've been out with some friends several times that love to noodle. They have done thier best get me to try it - THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD EVER DO THIS. These guys are nuts. But Okies do love it. I have respect for guys. And believe it or not, it is very legal. They also catch some huge fish 50-80 lbs is not uncommon. Wikelam is right, Flatheads are good eating. (Not as good as crappie - but not far behind). More power to all you noodlers - go get 'em for me. (I use jug lines to get them big flatheads).

Yeh here in OK baiting any animal and them killing it will get you into trouble. would not do that anyway. have hunted on wheat or alfalfa fields though. that is consiered ok here. as long as it is intended for crop use. the whole bait bucket thing is not for me. I have used the bait buckets to spread food for some pheasants that we are trying to get started around here. this is just a way to make sure they get some food the first few weeks they are released. If you are in Oklahoma around last week in may to last middle of july, try and look someone up to take you. after you get over the initial fear of doing it is alot of fun. almost as satisfying as taking a deer with primitive archery equipment.

okieboater---> yes crappie have a slightly better taste, so does saugeye, but i rate the flatheads higher because i can go out and 30 minutes later have enough great tasting meat that will feed 10 people. it takes a whole mess of crappie and then some to feed only 5 people, even if the crappie are good sized.
where in OK do you live. iam from stillwater.

Re: Noodling (Grabbling) for catfish

Noodling is not illegal in Arkansas either. Baiting deer or any other game animal is though, but you can put a feeder out

I know that in TX you can infact put Deer feeders out, because I hunt down there, and I am a part time resident. You couldnt hardy find a deer lease down there that doesnt have feeders on it. So I dont know, what is the difference in feeding them and baiting them? Well, according to TPW feeding them is herd management, and baiting them is attracting them to a certain area for harvesting.

I think that baiting is illegal in OK because it is only used during hunting season. planting food plots is done mostly year round.

Wikelam say snakes don't breathe under water.Neither does an alligator, but both catch food under water and both can bite under water. We caught many different fish(coonin)among them pike and the cotton mouth moccasion feels just like a pike.I know(more than once)I pulled one to the top.Never was bit and was in the water barefoot. That was in the swamps of Ga. yrs ago when food was scarce.Have better sence than that now.

mudcat---> snakes do not breathe under water, they will swim under water though. while noodling in one area and a snake is seen, and goes under, stay away, but if you have been in one area for a while, with no snakes, they are not going to just appear under a rick under water. it gets confusing, it takes someone with no sense to stick their hand under a rock to let a big cat latch ahold of it, but yet it takes some sense while you are doing it. see abeaver, stay away, see a snake, stay away, in a river with to much current, do not go in. simple, ones who do not take heed will get hurt.
by the way, have had a snake come from off the bank and swin accross my head when i came up from checking a hole
