So this is not just an Okie way of fishing.

Yes you could get ahold of some big cats. Me personally, I have caught a 40,36,32lb flatheads :D . these are the biggest ones. have caught a number of smaller ones around 15-20 though. these are small compared to some of the ones my friends have caught. some of them go as high as 60-80 lbs  . that is too big for me. i am relatively new to the sport. am learning. have seen it done for 20 years though. just now getting the courage to do it.

just curious to see how wide spread the method is in the US.

What if you stick you arm in a hole with a bunch of snakes? My uncle did that back in the day, and he darn near got his arm ripped off by a big ole cat.

All the snakes that live here in OK cannot breathe under water. so they would not be holed up under a rock under water. there are dangers though. turtles but in 20 years of seeing this done, never seen a turtle bite. a few crawfish have pinched me but mostly it is the fish that do the biting. have heard about beavers. but if i am going along the bank and i see several trees chewed down and there is a hole that is near a wood pile in the water and it leads up to the shore i leave it alone. beavers will not tunnel under rocks.

how big was the cat that ended his noodling

I was wrong, I thought it was my uncle, but it was my grandfather and his brother-in-law. the biggest one they caught was 56lbs. When he gets back in town, I will try to post some pics of it. On a fish that big, he told me that they used a hay-hook type of thing to grab them.

Not me, no way no how!!

Here in OK the hook on a stick will get you in big trouble. Noodleing is a hands only method. also this hook thing is very dangerous. not recommended, since it is also against the law here. i have posted the url to some of the fish, will try and post more. there are more fish pics if you go to that url and click on "go back to fish pics". will try and post the big one of the year. 32lbs.
Nothing more satisfying than to catch a big cat with bare hands. :D

Re: Noodling (Grabbling) for catfish

Sorry, but i have never really been duck hunting. I have been a guide(take others to some of these ponds to hunt) before though. between noodling in june july, school starting in august, dove hunting in september, deer bow season in october-december, primitive deer in october, gun deer in november, trout season december-march, second semester of school starting in january, bass fishing starting in march, turkey season in april, snagging for paddlefish in april, bass fishing and trolling for whatever when i can fit it in I have never found time to take it up. it seems like fun and have several friends that will show me the ropes. i am trying to go this year to at least try it. Oh yeah, i play golf and have a job too.

No closest thing to a muskie we have here in OK would be a saugeye. cross between walleye and sauger. does not look like a muskie but does have some teeth

Re: Noodling (Grabbling) for catfish

Greetings,

Too many gators down for me to try that in local waters. There are folks who noodle in MIssissippi, I saw them on a fishing show several months back. I would love to try it. You guy aught to start up a noodling fish camp where folks could go and stay in a cabin and pay you to take them noodling. I would go for sure, and I could proably get my dad to come along just to watch his crazy son wrestle with a fish :D
SoulWinner

I've heard tell of many folks grappling catfish here in TX.. You don't hear too much about it in these parts... cause... they don't take illegal fish and post pictures of themselves on the web (LOL). I'm not offended by your fishing method, I'd just be careful about publicising it.

Re: Noodling (Grabbling) for catfish

In the winter me and my buds have noodled for
pike.It is illegal to posses a gaff while fishing
in Alberta. So we have on occasion for a large
pike, used a heavy leather glove and reached down
the icehole and let the pike clamp down on the
glove, and pulled him from the water. Not quite the
same but from here on out I think I'll call it
noodling for pike.
