I own a 2002 Tohatsu 5HP four stroke which I have used for the last three seasons on my dinghy without any issues. One of my friends was impressed enough by the quality and performance, he went out and bought a leftover 2005 model. I went to see it and was surprised by how much quieter his seemingly identical motor was. Mine has a more distinct mechanical sound which I am guessing is the valves?

What should I look into here? Should I be overly concerned? The motor has not given me a bit of trouble other than one bout with bad fuel.

John

Same everything. Depending on background noise, wind, humidity, grade of oil, length between changes, oil/fuel dilution, valve wear, boat(lighter boats tend to cause vibration which can raise the noise level),etc., you can get different sounds at different times out of the same engine. I wouldn't worry about it, but if you are concerned...Check those valves.
