Got to thinking about this from a thread in the OB section {Noah asking God how long a cubit was] and looked it up. Taking the average of the generally accepted definitions of a cubit, Noah's boat was 475' long, 79' beam and 48' high. This was a pretty good sized boat for a first-time shadetree boat builder. I still don't see how he got all those animals in, though.
Along these same lines, Goliath was 9' 6" tall. {"Taped 6 cubits and a span, an ear chewin', eye gouging real mean man"]. Well, that's what the bibles down here say, anyway. Sounds like an early Mike Tyson, dosn't he.
If this should have been in the Project Boat section, JB can move it.

reminds me of the old Bill Cosby sketch where God
talks to Noah. it's very interesting to me that
in every culture around the world there is a
story of a great flood.

Since I've already looked it up, I won't give away "cubit". What I found interesting was the "span". It was the distance from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger with the hand extended, commonly conceded to be 9". They must have had big hands back then, because I wear XXL gloves and mine is only 9 1/4".

Re: Noah's Ark

measurments are some crazy factor's specialy, our's ...

are we the only country usin' the inch ,foot ,oz, & lb, quart...an farrenheight..??

the inch ,, was takin' from the span between the first & second joint of the index finger...of a english king..

from the same king ,, came the foot.. guess what body part that came from...

the yard.. was takin' from the same king.. the distance from his nose to his finger tip on one hand/one arm distance...

here we sent people to the moon with measurments that came from a kings body parts...

all the others ,temp , oz/lb/pint/gal,, i have no clue...
but i'm sure it's based upon somethin' stupid...

JACK :: the 'SPAN' sounds like the old horse height measurment thats still used today called ' HANDS '..

mine measure 9 inches exactly.. MY HAND that is ;) ..

idon't know JACK,, i think you have GOLIATH a little short....

i'll give my answer latter on tonite..

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Re: Noah's Ark

well ,, as i can see allmong ya are waitin' with baited-breath for the answer..

in carpentry terms a tad before a measurment is 'shy' .. alittle over is 'strong' ..

a cubit is 19 3/16inches strong..

it can easily be found on any tape measure it's represented by a dark triangle at every 19 3/16 up the tape..

it's odd ,, carpenters still use it today ,, cause it 'falls' on 8 foot exactly.. an 99 % of 'em don't know it's a cubit...

so the 'BIG MAN' was 9 foot 7 & 3/16 strong...

with the 'span' add 9 inches . for a grand total of 10 foot 4 & 3/16 strong..

Been in construction most of my life and I never noticed that triangle. Yup, I actually went out to my truck with a flashlight just to check for it.

100 % right Crab. I built my shop 19+ inches o.c. ( cost savings ) You have to really think it out when you build on that standard though be cause it ONLY breaks on 8 foot increments. The stagger on the roof sheathing was " a little different" but worked out fine,I slipped when it came time for the drywall. I ordered 12 footers as i normally would and had to trim every sheet. (oops... oh well, no big deal)

On the ark thing...How fast do you think it was with only two horses ?

MG, hey cool, someone who appreciates drag racing I grew up at tracks across the country....my dad raced funny cars.

Re: Noah's Ark

Did you know that Noah was 500 years old when he STARTED building the ark? Finished it at age 600... talk about waiting 'til late in life to start a project boat! :)

Re: Noah's Ark

There are still references to Rods as a unit of measure in this country also. The legal description of the lot my house is on is measured in Rods.
